i think i remember some DDR songs being like that. wouldn't it be distracting trying to see what's going on in the background while playing the notes? also, the game lags plenty by itself, i'm not sure that we need videos to make it worse. good idea though =)

Graphics are fluff.
They exist solely for the sake of onlookers. But, that said, they contribute a lot to presentation. Normally, I would say yes. I mean, what could be so harmful? Most of these songs already have music videos, so just play that.
However, look at how long FoF takes to decode .ogg files. Then think about the movie files. And the outlook isn't terribly good...

I believe some coder came in and said that it wasn't the code, which is apparently still used industrial, but how FoF implements it. Or something like that. My point is, don't be hatin' the Python.

I understand peoples points about being distracted. but as someone already mentioned, the graphics in GH just add to the whole feel, and don't distract. For one thing they make the game a lot more watchable for other people, lol, and anything to make this a more multiperson experience is great in my eyes.
I think it would be great if we could add video or some kind of graphics in there other than the shifting planes which currently few people have bothered altering. Anyway, each to their own. Fact is, if such things come into play then like all the other mods/updates, they would be optional in the game settings.

The biggest problem is that python is not the swiftest language out there. And then the modules for opengl and the game libraries are also not super optimized.
The lag and massive CPU usage people see is really all because of this. FoF is not really a game that is graphically all that challenging, but the implementation medium does not allow for the kind of optimizing a stand alone game would have.
Take for example Unreal Tournament 2004. It has complex 3d graphics and effects, and yet FoF often times lags more with less going on. I'm not sure you're likely to see background animation stuff any time soon unless many more things can be optimized.

if the game ever gets converted to another language, than we can try this. as for now though.... I doubt it would work on the best computers.
on the topic of whether we WANT it, yes. I have had lots of people come into my dorm room when I'm playing and say "Oh cool, its like PC guitar hero- wait, where's the stuff in the background? that kind of sucks..."
people obviously like it because it adds to the feel of the game.
