Just play a note (fretted), then bend it slightly and release it (pull off of the string).

Actually I tried that while I was practicing, it works, you were right, you can pull of into an open note.

Although if you had a bar across the fretboard for an open note, it would have to be raised or distinguishable from the lines on the fretboard that keep the beat.

The beat bars would be a different color, no? Also the open fret bar could be made a bit thicker, maybe even a 3d model.

I'll go for the "3D model" option.

As for the beat bars, wouldn't you have to edit the neck image? As long as the open fret bars are easily distinguisable from the neck then there won't be any problems.

no, he means that the beat bars would already be a different color - at least that's what i think he means...

anyway, how feasible is this? does anyone know if it's even possible to code this?

It should be. Five frets are already coded. This would just be adding a sixth fret, although it should be easier than the other 5 since no extra controls need to be added. The tutorial might need to be redone to include an open fret, though. The game already cancels out the strum if no frets are held, so the code that does this could probably just be changed to handle playing the open fret. The MIDI reading code and the display code would also have to be modified, but that would probably be fairly light modification.

The tutorial is really behind already. It doesn't have anything about the HOPOs (I checked!).
tibiazak, yes that was what I meant

Forgive some thread necromancy, but the "What ideas have already been pronounced here?" sticky links here for discussion on open frets. Now that Guitar Hero: World Tour offers support for open frets, I assume there would be higher demand/interest in adding open frets to FoF. This thread is pretty old and for all I know, this has been added to something like FoFiX, except I don't know where there is a complete feature list for FoFiX that I could check. Has this been implemented already? If not, are there plans to do so?

How about this for an idea? Allow open frets. Make an option in the menu to disable open frets (which would convert them to green). Therefore you can use tem, but you don't have to use them.

How would you handle a note when the song calls for an open fret, but you have the option off? Do we just ignore that note?

I was about to Necroflame you ("Necroflame" copyright 2009, David R. Jio, AKA "Electro Tomato") until I saw what you had to say. And I agree.

Why would anyone even have the option turned off? There really is no need. If the song doesn't have an open fret, then you don't have to worry about it, neh? No need to even have a "turn off open fret" option. It's not like strumming with no frets down doesn't already mess up your multiplyer.

But open fret isn't really harder than Amazing. And what if say I wanted to play a Rock Band 2 song that has them on Hard. How about allowing them in all dificulties for songs that have them, but allow them to be turned off or converted to a different color in option menu.

Option Menu
Open Fret: ON/Convert To Green/Ignore
