PLEASE help with a way to make this game actually work on Windows Vista! Whenever I try to load it up, all I get is incredibly garbled pixels and the game is totally unplayable. I have an ATI x850xt card with the newest drivers and it just doesn't work. I guess the OpenGL format is the issue but unlike pretty much every other problem I've ever experienced with a PC game, there doesn't appear to be any kind of work-around to this one. Unless SOMEONE out there has a solution for me? You would be my hero, I promise you.

The REAL frustrating part of the whole thing is that if I just run the vanilla drivers that ship with Windows Vista, the game works. But obviously I can't use these drivers on anything else because games won't run well at all on those plain drivers.

So if anybody out there has ANY kind of advice/solutions, I'd really appreciate it!

does vista have compatibility options like xp does? if so you could probably set it to xp or something... right click the game .exe and go to properties, and see if there is a compatibility tab. i don't have vista yet so i don't know if that would work or not...

Yeah, I've tried it, and it didn't work. It's just weird to me how it works with the drivers that come shipped with Vista but it doesn't with ATI's updated, newest drivers. You would THINK compatibility would improve with a new release, not regress.

So from the looks of it, I'm pretty much just screwed until there is either a version of this game released that works on Vista, or video card drivers which include better OpenGL compatibility? Depressing =(

Well, tbh its your own fault for using an OS with known compatability issues with alot of software. It'll be at least 6-12 months before I consider switching.
Its just like life. Quite interesting in parts, but no substitute for the real thing.

Define "alot." I have TONS of programs installed on my PC and this is the ONLY one I can't use. Here's what I have:

- Avast Antivirus
- CCleaner
- DVD Copy 5
- Slysoft AnyDVD
- Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi
- Diskeeper 10
- Morrowind
- Oblivion
- Civ IV
- GTR 2
- Caesar IV
- MVP 2005
- Nascar 2003
- The Sims 2 and ALL Expansion packs
- World of Warcraft
- Warcraft 3
- Command and Conquer 3
- Out of the Park Baseball 2007
- Battle for Wesnoth
- Flight Simulator X
- CivCity: Rome
- Half Life 2
- FIFA 07

But yeah, you're right, it's "my" fault. ALL of those programs work 100% perfect on Windows Vista, and I have absolutely zero issues with my PC outside of Frets on Fire not working. But Vista is the problem. Ok. Thanks for that great input. I appreciate it.

Conversely, I know people have have had severe problems with some of the above games, and others that haven't had any problems running FoF on Vista. Most of those products are also retail/commercial, so they have a team of people getting paid for ensuring Vista compatibility. These FoF devs provide us with a decent product for free.

I would be angry at MS for alienating OpenGL-based games. Take that, open-source community.

I'd just recommend using XP or somehow updating your gfx card... (Which shouldn't be too hard!) :p

Dual-booting. Here's how to do it with Vista, if anyone is interested: http://www.geardigest.com/2007/02/28/how_to_dual_boot_xp_and_vista/

@ Above

Not sure - Because i've never tried a Mac. But i HIGHLY doubt that's possible. All i know is you can install Vista / Microsoft's OS on a MAC now.

I used to have XP and Linux (Dual Boot)... Both very good OS's :)

Now it's just XP.
