I install the release candidate a while pack for the Vista Service Pack 1. For what ever reason(I couldn't rack it down), it essentially broke Frets on Fire v1.1.324. I hadn't tried the newer versions, but the old one at least was rendered unable to run. Just a word of caution for Vista users, as SP1 is coming out in a few weeks.

vista sp1 has been out for all of Q4 of 2007.. (as an rc/beta)
can someone confirm that it doesnt work?
also, it may be a driver problem, it may have to do with your .ini, it could be lots of things.. try this.
delete your .ini in your fof directory AND in %appdata% by going to run and typing %appdata%, then delete the fretsonfire folder.
download rfmod from https://www.fretsonfire.org/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=11;t=11473;
uninstall your old frets on fire, extract this to a folder and play.
note that rfmod is 1.2.451 and it is not the version you have, if you want the version you have then re-dl it and just delete the traces of your old installation AND the fof .inis then reinstall it into the directory where it was installed into.

Do not try using the latest version!! fof v.12.512. It doesnt work properly it never has! its full of bugs and errors, you best chance is like i_pk_pjers_i said and get the RFmod 4 version, which is FOFv.1.2.451 + rfmod 4. That will fix loads of things like memory leaks, and give you nice things like 2 player modes.
But just try removing things like your fretsonfire.ini before you try installing another version. Usually removing your .ini file is enough to fix most problems.
I doubt SP1 will actually kill your copy of FOF, due to the fact fof isnt actually installed on your computer, its unrar and play. which means nothing gets added to the registry or anything like that.
I recently installed Vista, i keep my fof on a differnt drive ( so it wasnt wiped when i installed vista) and as soon as vista ws done installing i was able to just click on the FOF.exe and run the game right away.
Now if it can handle a complete OS being installed its certainly gonna be able to handle an update! you will probably just find it altered a few windows settings that didnt agree with your current FOF.ini.
But if removing the .ini file does no good, just try re-installing a fresh copy of FOF.
