the strings would keep vibrating so you would have to palm mute pretty damn fast in the middle of a solo
Not if you played on the frets instead of the strings. You could play everything on the first five frets of the E string. Then for chords, write the program so it recognizes the first five frets of all other strings. As to why to do this, it would be cool, if just for novelty's sake.

HOPO would be too easy then.
they could mod it to work with 12-16 and rape every song available.
it would indeed be "the ****" though.
as i said before, 1/4" to 1/8" converter, plug into computer, heavily mod game.
edit: and no chords TT_TT

I don't know that the game itself would need modding. Ideally it would be done through a utility that converts tones into keystrokes or joystick presses. So it would convert an "F" into "F1 + Enter". I suppose it would have to have some preventative measure so that it didn't record a bunch of strokes when you're holding a note. As long as it recognized the start of a note though, I think you'd be all right.

Has this anything at all to do with the original idea, or is this something better?
/e
It IS the original idea
Yeah, I just came up with a way in which it's feasible.
People were pointing out that if you just played open strings you would need to palm mute alot, and really fast. So I said you would play on the frets. See, you'd program the utility or mod so it recognized the different frets being played, and recorded them as keystrokes. Any note on the first fret would record as F1, Any note on the second fret as F2, etc. This would make chords possible. It would also allow for all five frets at once (well, you'd need an extra finger). The utility or mod would also have to recognize the beginnings and ends of notes.

It will never happen, unless you have a MIDI guitar and want to rewrite the program...
But I do plug in my podXT Live and my computer into a mixer, and play frets on fire and real guitar at the same time... I get 0 points in the game, but the Guitar Hero songs are really nice backing tracks, and watching notes cross the screen is great for helping me keep time.

There is such an item that mimics an amp on the computer, but sets the keys.
It's basically a USB Guitar.
You can find it for $99 at www.thinkgeek.com

We're all aware of it. It wouldn't help at all.
