Drum songs = easy! wait what?

Postby Scoreking81 » Tue Nov 24, 2009 9:16 pm

if ur like me than u want some more drum songs. well today i came across a program called drumagog. Bassically it is used to replace the drum track of an mp3 with a midi drum track (often triggered by Ezdrummer, Addictive drums, BFD etc.) but i figured out that u can get the midi track, import it to FL Studio and make a chart using the midi chart strategy. Now i dont have 380 dollars for drumagog and cant really get the demo to work. but still it would be 10x easier to make drum songs

i can see both good and bad points with this idea.. Good point. Its gonna be easier to make drum charts than to sit there and click each note separate, faster too, kinda...( ill explain why i said kinda faster in a moment )
Bad points. It costs money... Thats the idea gone instantly. nobody is gonna pay out big money for an app just to make drum charts... we have been down this road a few times and this is a hobby for fun, we dont wanna be spending our wages ( if your an adult ) or your pocket money ( if your a kid ) on a hobby like this ESP when you can do this just as well but cheaper ( ill come back to that point in a sec )
OK why i said kinda faster than normal step recording ( note by note ) this is using the exact same idea as using your GH guitar to fret note charts, and the big problem with that is . its innacurate. regardless how good a drummer or a GH guitarst you may be. you WILL need to go back and do some cleaning up of the file, even if its just move a few notes coz they were slightly off time, you will stil have to go back and tweak it ( same as you do with real instruments, songs are hardly ever recorded all in one go, in one take, there is allways some editing that needs to be done) and thats what will slow you down again , so it may not actually make it any faster.

If you wanted a REAL easy method of getting drum tracks, rather than creating it at all. just DL a midi or a GP file ( which is still a midi ) of the song you wanna do. they are not allways dead accurate, but your saving all that time in fretting either live or step recording. Plus even if the midi is out of sync with the real audio file. at least your gonna allready be shown what drum hit is which, you just have to tweak the syncing a bit...
Cheaper alternatives to drumagog.... I cant believe im suggesting this again ( like the third thread today, but anyway.. ) altho we dont condone warez trading on here. it is common knowlege than many of the users have a copy of fruity loops ( which they did not pay for). i can honestly say ive never seen the name drumagog appear on any warez sites. Now... Fruity loops has direct joystick inputs available .. AKA joystick button 1 does THIS. button 2 does THAT etc, used mainly for controlling effects and such. but can be used to control notes. so if you set up FL to use the direct inputs and set those inputs as the notes used in a drum track. you could load the audio into FL and then hit record and play the drums directly over the top of the audio ( while recording the note placements as you play them ) If you dont have FL or dont want to use it for whatever reason there is another way too. Get Xpadder or a similar app that binds joystick inputs to keyboard keys. Most midi editors ( including the free ones like anvil studio ) will let you use the keyboard kinda like a piano. so different keys on the keyboard correspond to keys on the piano. if you use Xpadder to bind the joystick inputs to those notes used in a drum track you could record your note playing that way.

So to summarise ... its expensive, it may or may not be quicker than fretting step record style, depends how accurate you are at fretting step record. Gonna give you plenty of cleanup work after you have finished recording. and its an app that does what any half decent ( or even crap ) midi editor has been able to do for years.
Oh and this just in.... Ive just found drumagog on " Some warez site " it turns out its actually nothing more than a VST (virtual instrument ) as with most VST's it has standalone capability and like most VST's it can be used inside another program like Fruity loops or Reaper. BTW fruity loops comes with like 3 different drum VST plugins built into it...they will all do the same as this vst just fine..

Its a good find. always good to know of other choices we have. but to be honest we can do everything it has to offer already with existing software. so prolly not worth the hassle to most people.. I may actually get it myself tho ( as i have an exstensive collection of VST's allready  ) on second glance i wont be... i saw a couple of DL links each said the file is 35mb in size. altho its supposed to come with 4gb of drum sample libraries so it looks like its missing a few files

ok, good to know, i alreaddy tried "legally buying" wink wink cough torrenting cough Drumagog but i couldnt find it . also yeah i already know about midi stuff thats how i made the drumcharts i have done. I also tried the FL studio with rock band drums controller and it was to hard to get the song perfect, but if i sat down with the song and went back and editied it im sure it would work better
