Magnulus wrote:Is there a good tutorial for Mac users anywhere? I got quite confused with the whole adding songs thing, since there are no folders, just a .app file, but couldn't find any help. I figured out that the .app file actually has that whole folder structure and everything built in, and I was able to put my songs in by exploring the contents of that package, but I'm not sure everybody knows about this... Maybe I'm the dumb one for not knowing about that in the first place, though. ^_^

Works great, by the way. Awesome game. It looks luvverly on my 20 inch iMac (intel). Only thing is that it crashes whenever I try to apply changes in the settings, but that's no big deal. I've gotten used to just pressing enter to let it close down and then booting it back up.

Tutorial? In case you didn't know .app in OSX are actually folders which are treated as files for user friendliness... right click, SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS and there you can see what's in there...
Unfortunately my Mac is G4 and it's still not working there...

In case you didn't read what you just quoted, I did say that I figured it out. :D

I was more asking for the general public, since most people who are new to macs (or just not expert users), and there is an increasing amount of them these days, will probably get a bit confused when the installation instructions simply say to put the files in the folder FretsOnFire/data/songs ...

I was confused for a long time myself before I decided to experiment. I even tried making those folder manually. Just a small note in the installation instructions on how to work the mac version would suffice, I suppose.

Well, if you write it in more places, no one will get hurt... but it should be expected that a new Mac user should know how that works...
Anyway I wouldn't know how you fixed the situation... maybe via Terminal.app ???

No, if you control-click on the application (or any application, really) you can select "Show Package Contents." This opens up the application like a folder, where you can look around, and in the case of FoF, copy the songs.

If you didn't read my posts, I was joking... anyway that's what I did say!

Hm, well... Most new mac users I know have no real clue what's going on, because they're just sort of thrust into it. They're told it's better than a PC and they go for it.

I've had my imac since november (and I've used older Mac OSes before that) but -I- didn't know about it. Say what you will about my computer literacy, but I was literate enough to find out about it, and working in a photo store where I get all KINDS of complete computer retards, I think I can safely say that I'm above the level of the average computer user, especially users on unfamiliar systems.

So all I'm saying is that another sentence or two wherever installing addons are mentioned isn't really THAT much of an effort to put into it, is it?

Maybe a generic note for OSX Users shall do.

I my approach with OSX (started with Panther in mid 2004) the program management was the first thing I looked into when I knew that all you had to move to install an app was a single folder... it didn't take much longer to realize that the only easy way to implement that was to do what Apple did... :-)

Actually, lots of apps on the Mac just go in the Applications folder, and the user doesn't need to root around inside the package at all.

Instead, upon launching, these apps "install themselves" and create support folders in "/Users/username/Library," or
"/Users/username/Library/Application Support."

It would make much more sense, actually, if Frets on Fire created/recognized such a folder inside "Users/username/Library/Application Support." The user could copy songs inside there if they like. And then when/if FoF is updated, all we'd have to do is replace the old app with the new one. No need to preserve the song files from within the package.

That said, I suspect some of this nonstandard installation comes from the fact that the app is a port and is cross platform. It wasn't designed initially for Mac... but I'm just happy that it does in fact work on our beloved platform. And it's FREE. So I'm certainly NOT complaining!

I have Guitar Hero 2 for Xbox 360. The guitar is USB of course. I just tried the guitar in my Mac (for use with Frets on Fire,) but was not successful.

The device shows up in System Profiler like so:
Guitar Hero X-plorer:

Version: 31.22
Bus Power (mA): 500
Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: RedOctane Inc©2006
Product ID: 0x4748
Serial Number: 091EA40
Vendor ID: 0x1430

I tried this driver which is supposed to work with OS X and 360 peripherals, but it didn't work:
http://tattiebogle.net/index.p....xDriver

I wrote to the author of the driver (http://mice-software.com/contact.php) to see if he'd be interested in rolling in support for the Xplorer guitar controller. That'd be a great way to play FoF on our Macs!

I'm having the same problem again with the latest version (1.2) on my brand new (few days old) White Macbook, 2ghz core 2 duo. Version 1.1 seems to work, though is a little unstable in the menu's and consistently crashes when using the apply settings thing in the menu's. It is playable though.

In 1.2 it opens, screen switches black, nothing happens, and then it closes again if I press return.

If there's anything I can do to help you guys get the mac version more stable I'm quite happy to. I agree that having the songs stored in the .app folder is a bad idea, maybe the built in songs could be there, and extra's could be added to ~/Library/Frets on Fire/songs/?
