I just downloaded this game last night. I downloaded a pack off ISOhunt with a bunch of custom songs and they worked great, fun to play on a keyboard. Then I used the torrents on this site to download all of the songs for GH3 and GH2. Unfortunately, the songs were really hard to play. Notes that were close together worked very poorly and it seemed like the time frame for hitting notes was much less. Songs like institutionalized were unplayable. Would a PS2 to USB adapter make this game work as well as it would on console? I notice most people use the GH controller.

YOu used torrents? I don't even see any torrents on this site. Anyway, try looking here:
https://www.fretsonfire.org/cgi-bin....21;st=0
https://www.fretsonfire.org/cgi-bin....19;st=0

And Yes, according to reports, it would work as well. In some cases people have had to use Joy2Key or a similar program to get the alternate strumming to work properly. And also, remember to search.

There are torrents right here in this topic:

https://www.fretsonfire.org/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=5;t=5619

And anyway, I don't see why you're telling me to search or linking me to those download topics, I told you I already got the songs from those torrents. I did a search and I didn't see any topics with people asking how well it worked.

But at least you answered the only question that I did, in fact, ask. I'd still like to hear from a couple of other people who play both GH and FoF and see if it's just as responsive as GH with a controller before I spend money.

While using a GH or RB controller works great, it's not going to be any more 'responsive' than the keyboard.

The problems you are citing (timing window, and HOPO) is definitely different than the commercial game. FoF is harder than GH, the timing window is more strict. Changing the controller wont' change that. The HOPO system in the default FoF is NOT the same as in GH2. A few mods will make it better and much more like GH2, but not exactly the same. And GH3 is another matter

Oh yeah, I guess I overlooked those. The reason I was pointing you to those is that I thought you may have gotten a bad batch. Then I remembered (too late) that the GH songs don't have those kinds of problems.

I'm telling you to search because it's good to search, and you'll find alot of good information about how to set up your controller and such by searching. Maybe people didn't ask how well it worked because it worked just fine, eh? I wasn't implying that your question had been asked before.

You just need to time your key presses better if you want to be good at the game. It may be possible that you're timing is a bit off. While changing the controller won't change the timing of the game, it may possibly be more comfortable for you to play and make your timing better.

I'll take this opportunity to point out that I've only used GH controllers for FOF. Definately worth it though -- the note window's tightness translates really nice into the actual GH games.

NOTE: If you use a next-gen controller (Xplorer, Les Paul), use Joy2Key to remove the dodgy alt-strumming thing.

Okay, so apparently the window for hitting notes in FoF is less than GH. Is there a simple mod which will increase the timing window? Apparently RF mod and Cmod will do this to an extent but RF mod seems to not be working for me(it won't let me set the keys to 1,2,3,4,5 and I can't play with F1,F2, etc. I also don't know if it will work with the Guitar Hero mod. I don't really want to play this game if I have to have my skill level destroyed because it's too hard to hit the notes.

There's no reason RFMod4 should keep you from being able to set your keys (as far as I know). Did you install it correctly? Did you delete your original fretsonfire.ini file? What happens when you try to set your keys?

If RFMod4 doesn't work for you, try Frets On Fire v 1.1.324 with RF Mod 3.5.

Herings mod opens up the window, also.

Well, I tried deleting the fretsonfire.ini file. This made it so that Frets on Fire started up in 640x480 resolution and crashed. I'm not sure if my setup supports anything below 800x600, I can't set windows to 640x480. Nothing unusual happens when I set the keys, it just when I get into the game they don't work. I had it set to `,1,2,3,4 at one point, and the only one that worked was the "`" key

If by "less" you mean "larger", then yeah, FoF is pretty easy mode. Hopefully sometime soon we will see an option for a tighter note window in Alarian's mod.

Oh, and a Guitar Hero controller is pretty much essential in my opinion. Then again though, if you are going to spend money on a guitar for FoF you might as well buy Guitar Hero 2 or Rock Band. You might be lucky and find a cheap used X-plorer around.

even in alarian, the note window is smaller than gh3. in stock fof, its much tighter than gh2. "fof is pretty easy mode" lol. unless, he DOES have alarian. then e just worded it wrong.
