Song list - Mood bar

Postby Azzco » Thu Sep 17, 2009 9:22 pm

I think it would be nice to have a Moodbar in the song list, wouldn't necessarily have to calculate values on the music.
Maybe use the midi file for this, colour for tempo and height of the wave depending on room between the notes (maybe ad some extra for chords). I don't know.
If I had the time I'd do a simple mock-up, but I'm a bit limited right now (need to get some sleep and all that).

Use case: Tempo changing songs will be easy to spot. You might not want to play those (the slow parts can get a bit boring after a while).

Anyway my 2 cents, comments?

It's not like I dislike sleeping, I really do like it to be honest. It's the whole wake up/go to sleep business I don't like.

Hmm, sounds interesting. I'd never heard of a moodbar before, but I followed your link and had a look.
And yeah, basing it off the MIDI would be cool. You could get a quick visual feedback on the song's difficulty. And you can see there's like a difficult solo in the middle of a song, while the rest of it's mostly slow and simple.

Interesting idea, but it might end up having the same probelms as the difficulty calculator. There are many things affecting it which could make things quite complex: comparing chords to hopos is not easy. Of couse, I'm not the one to speak about things like this, I know nothing.

BUT, if it would calculate values on the music (unlike you said), it could be used in game. You know that flashing bar over the freatboard? Instead of flashing in the colors of the frets, maybe it could be based on the moodbar. Or it could affect the fretboard/surroundings a little.

From what I understand of the moodbar though, you wouldn't have to compare the two. In a difficulty calculator I can see this being a problem, but in a moodbar chords could be one colour, and hopos another. If there's lots of both, the colours would kinda mix together, and you can tell it's really gonna be hard :tongue2:

The idea on it's own seems pretty good.. But I'm not sure setting it up as a moodbar would be the best way to do it, personally.

This sort of reminds me of some DDR game I played (don't remember which, there are so many >.>).. And songs would have a little chart by them. It was a circle with different aspects of gameplay around it, and inside the circle would be a shape, and however common a certain aspect of gameplay was in a song, it would cause the shape inside the circle to stretch in that direction.. And if there was something that wasn't in the song much, the shape wouldn't really be pulled towards it, y'know?

Sort of seems like the same thing, but doesn't exactly use colors to do it.

Yeah, I kinda like that idea too (I think it was in StepMania, for the record, but I've seen similar charts in things other than music games as well). It is a very similar thing I think, but the moodbar also tells you where in the songs these parts occur (in the middle, towards the end, etc).

Ah, I didn't notice it worked like that. Seems like it would be a bit helpful for planning paths, too.

Moodbar is cool, I used it on Amarok back in the 1.4 days.

However, using it on the MIDI may not be best, considering that the GH/RB Midi files aren't the most musical. =\

If memory serves, it is simply a visual representation of the sound waves. It mostly measures intensity and transforms that to colour.

Stump could implement moodbar in his sleep, I bet.

The idea as I understand it is not to base it on the same values as Amarok, though. More on things like note distance, hopos, chords... things like that, so you can kinda see difficulty at a glance.

There I go making assumptions again - I doubt it would be too tough to do, though I question how capable moodbar in and of itself would be of handling it.

It's an idea I support, anyway.

Quick question. And I apologize if this seems like something that is obvious =S

If this feature was created.. Would we simply be able to download it and put it into FoF ourselves, or would we have to wait for it to sort of be built in to it in a future update?

It would be built in to a future update for FoFiX... if it's done.
Same with most/all features in FoFiX.
If someone made a mod for the original FoF, then they'd probably make it to download separately, but I somehow doubt that will happen.

So what is going to be used for this now, charts or ogg?

I actually support this idea, one of the best since times, I think people get tired of seeing the same kind of stuff (song data like name, artist, album art etc.) and would love to see something new added to it.
