In the source code things like this can be found:
So maybe they are working on multiplayer.
Code: Select all
newMultiplayerMenu = [
   ("Host Multiplayer Game", self.hostMultiplayerGame),
   ("Join Multiplayer Game", self.joinMultiplayerGame),
  ]
So maybe they are working on multiplayer.

Yay. I've tried it once or twice, and it's funny. My house have 2 PCs and a notebook... could be nice.
The main problem that I had was because of the different loading times of the musics... so I had to press enter before the other computer, as my PC is slower... but I could find the right time.
This would already be nice. About a "coop game", sounds weird to me (although I usually like coop games), but I don't know what it would look like, in FoF...
...
Yeah multiplayer definately sounds like a great idea to me. I don't know if you guys have read about guitar hero II, but in that game they've announced a coop mode. The whole idea is that you'll be able to play a song simultaneously, one playing lead guitar and the other playing bass/rhythm guitar. Here's an extract from gamespot.com:
"It makes perfect sense that Primus would find their way into the game, since one of the big focuses of the sequel is to provide co-op play for two players with one player on lead guitar and the other on rhythm guitar or, in the case of Primus (as well as certain others), bass. The same competitive lead guitar multiplayer from last year's game will be featured this time around too, but now you and a friend can simultaneously play through entire songs and be playing entirely different parts. We spent the bulk of our test time trying this feature out, and frankly, we had a blast with it. "
I'd really like to see this added to frets on fire one time. If you hook up two usb keyboards (or more? hehe) to your pc it could be possible, but then again I don't know a thing about programming so I'll leave it to the experts.

The main problem about this is that the songs should be edited so that they'd have two tracks, one for rhythm and one for the lead...
Sure it would be great, but most musics wouldn't fit in it, or at least, all the released tracks wouldn't work, you know...
...
If you did do it though, why not take it all the way and have a drum player too?
With Four USB keyboards you could have two guitars (or one guitar and keyboard), drums, and bass.
That would absolutely require access to the master tracks for every song though. No amount of filtering is going to seperate instruments that much.

I've never played multiplayer on Guitar Hero, as I have never wanted to pay $40 for another controller, but how does co-op work in it? In any case, as mentioned by others, Guitar Hero II will have co-op, with player two playing bass, so, hopefully, co-op can be implemented by Guitar Hero II's release so that we can rip it and enjoy it.
However, I do know that Guitar Hero has a straight, clean Versus mode. This wouldn't require any reworking of the songs, and thus should be implemented and would be quite awesome frankly. At the "split-screen" (as the game doesn't split the screen, right?) level, this should be quite easy, but also not terribly useful: I doubt most people have two USB keyboards and most computers can't pick up more than one joypad (i.e. Guitar Hero controller) simultaneously.
Once they work up to the LAN level, it'll be truly sweet. Why? Hamachi. It emulates LAN over the internet, so the network code wouldn't have to be too terribly advanced.
But whatever, it's all a long ways off.
Oh, someone mentioned multiple instruments. That is done to a degree by Konami as Drummania, Guitar Freaks, and, in some rare instances, Keyboardmania can all hook up to each other. Similarily, there's a DS game called Band Brothers which emulates all of the tracks and lets up to eight players play each one. As cool as a freeware supreme rhythm game of the heavens would be, it would be complicated and, above all, make the current awesome name irrevelant.
