Browsing around, I've seen a huge number of "amazing" difficulty songs for FoF. I was wondering, why not take that a step farther and include a difficulty level that uses the REAL guitar tabs and a MIDI hookup instrument instead of the keyboard or guitar controller? With the insane amount of MIDI software, it should be possible from a programming prospective, and fretting would be cake. Just import the guitar tabs and be done. The only problem I can see would be on the interface end...
Good idea, bad idea or ugly idea...?

Re: MIDI hookup instrument compatability?
What you're wanting is being implemented in Rock Band 3. I'm sure at some point, custom "pro-mode" charts will follow, but it's too early to know when that will be. Guitar pro and other electronic format guitar tabs on the Internet will be too unreliable to use as is.
Re: MIDI hookup instrument compatability?
Synthesia uses standard notation as well as falling notes. The game controller is a MIDI keyboard (or MIDI instrument). By playing synthesia you are learning to play an instrument, that is the bonus to Synthesia. Unfortunately synthesia is all MIDI playback, and can get annoying. FOFIX has "real" music playing wchich is awesome! I think Synthesia should be considered as an influence for FOFIX, and maybe vise versa. Synthesia is fun and you can learn about music... Something that I am interested in.
As far as internet guitar pro tabs being unreliable, I completely disagree. Any semi- decent guitarist can tell which ones are note for note and which ones are more just "scratch sheets". Most guitarists play by ear and don't sit there reading TAB's like you would standard notation. This is one reason that only some TAB's are note for note. However, it shouldn't take long to figure out which style the TAB is done in.
MY 2 cents.

I can't find any reference to using anything other than a computer keyboard on their website for this "guitarstar" game.

Re: MIDI hookup instrument compatability?
That's pretty cool, but the main drawback is that without the ability to manually define the tempo map, the tab and audio are not going to line up and stay synced like a chart would. The RB3 MIDI format will essentially include beat synced tablature and will solve this problem.
