Real Guitar Controller

Postby OpenChord » Thu Nov 19, 2009 8:05 pm

So rather than just submitting an idea, I went ahead and built a device that lets you play Frets on Fire with a real guitar. Using the actual strings and frets, the hardware interprets the connections between the strings and frets as button presses and sends out the appropriate USB controller data. It lets you use a guitar like a regular guitar hero controller, where pressing on the first 5 frets correspond to the buttons, or you can map specific notes or chords to the colors.

It's all open source, and you can find more information at our website - www.OpenChord.org.

Right now, I'm looking for people who would be interested in testing it out, since I want to make sure it doesn't super-suck.. I'm also interested in meeting people who would be interested in working on the project too, but if anyone is interested in testing one out, I'd love to hear from you!

It is open source. All the software and instructions are free and open for anyone to view, use, distribute, etc. It's just the hardware that costs the money. There's not much you can do about that.

Something like this...

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3165298

...I infact noticed a real guitar that was converted for use with your PC :D It has a numpad where the fret buttons would be and as you strum the strings it converts them to MIDI tones or something. Sounds weird but it looks awesome. Can't remember the source though.

I might actually be able to do this which would be amazing since I love playing my guitar...it would also make frets on fire ridiculously easier and more fun to play...I'll try it out and let you know how it works.

The actually guitar would produce sound no matter what since you'd actually be strumming the strings on a guitar but the game would be producing the sound to what ever song you picked...really if you had your speakers (or headphones) turned up loud enough you wouldn't hear the guitar but it would still be making noise.
Check out my songs here If you download any of my frets any feedback would be appreciated, Also I'm taking request so go here if you want a song fretted...thank in advance to anyone who gives feedback or request a song.

Wow, sorry for abandoning this thread; I just moved to Australia, so I've been busy with doing that...

Thanks for the interest! Yeah, the strumming real notes thing does sound kinda strange.. But the the hardware figures out if you're strumming by just the contact of the wired pick to the strings, so while you can strum, you can also just tap the pick against the strings to trigger a strum...

Oh, and abomb (and anyone else interested), if you're willing to test it out for us, I could send you out a circuit board and some parts to get you started.. e-mail [email protected] and we can figure something out.

Wrong thread, wrong language, wrong everything.
Este es un foro en ingles. Como aparentemente no sabes nada de eso, Te sugiero vayas a un foro de FOF hecho especialmente para los usuarios de habla española como fofspain o algo asi.

Yay for using online translators and acting like you can speak a foreign language.

Damn, I would do this if it didn't cost money :(
