I didn't know how to call it.
If you played the Nintendo DS game Ouendan or Elite Beat Agents you'll know what I'm talking about.
Basically it's a bonus of points, let's say 300 if you press the note in the right moment, 100 points if you are 1 or 0.5 sec sooner or 50 if you are later. Something like that.
Accuracy notes bonus.

Guitar Hero is one of the few rhythm games that has very little focus on actual rhythm. That is, it doesn't matter if you're off by a good deal, just that you are actually able to nail the insane solo.
Use Bemani's (i.e. Beatmania, Drummania, Guitar Freaks, Pop 'N Music, DDR, etc.) scale: Perfect (the current hit window), Great, Good, Bad, Poor, Miss, with the last three resetting your combo. Perfect would give the current amount of points, so as to not screw up current scores, and all other "ranks" would give less on a sliding scale. The current hit window is very small compared to GH, and this presents a big learning curve for first time FoFers (I'm so going to hell for that term...), so increasing the window BUT reducing the points would allow newbies to coexist with guitar gods and let everyone eat cake peacefully.
Kudos for the EBA/Ouendan comment. Don't look at my sig.

Quoted for emphasis, because jii, and many others I'm sure, went right over it.
That is, the current scores would be valid because the maximum score would be the same. But scores that have not been maximized would increased because people would miss less.

That would be pretty cool, I think the perfect sound should only play if you hit every note in the right time lol. That would be VERY difficult to do haha.

I'm suggesting a staggered "bonus" that rewards those that meet the current window.
When I first starting playing FoF, my accuracy was hideous because FoF's window for hitting notes is quite small and it does not have any tiers for points.
By staggering the tiers and their points, the current high scores would be unaltered and the game would have a smoother learning curve. What's not to like? Want some cake?
And, aeteRnus, I think you're thinking about held out notes.

I think the greatest point this has to offer is exactly that it's easier to learn how to play. A few friends of mine have tried to play and even with the easiest songs they just don't get it right. After about two or three songs they're ready to quit and that's a shame...
Cake? Yes, please :p
What doesn't kill you, only makes you pissed off.
