Update: see last post, running Linux Mint now. Still same problem
/*******************************/
Hi there guys,
During the waiting for solutions for problem in other topic (viewtopic.php?f=32&t=38198) I thought, why not try FoFix on linux. I have a dualboot system (windows 7 RC and ubuntu 9.04).
After installing FoFix and copying new songs to my songs folder, I started playing, yeah, no lag (see topic mentioned before in this post), but: after a minute or so, my computer shut down....... what the....... after restart, tried again, after minute playing, SHUTDOWN ......
tried googling, couldn't find people with similar problem, so what do you wise people suggest? :(

Re: FoFix makes ubuntu shut down
I really doubt that it's fofix doing this, check your logs (both fofix log and system logs /var/logs) unfortunately (well not really I guess. :)). I haven't experienced weird crashes like this too often and I haven't had to check the files in there, so I can't point out a specific system log to look at.
Fofix log should be located in ~/.fofix/fofix.log..
Oh wait version 3.100? If so it's in ~/.fretsonfire/fretsonfire.log
Also how does it restart? is it a hard reboot kind of thing or more like "shutdown -r" with usplash and stuff?

It's not like I dislike sleeping, I really do like it to be honest. It's the whole wake up/go to sleep business I don't like.
Re: FoFix makes ubuntu shut down
It's a soft shutdown, although it's not as it should be, but you could have figured that out for yourself. I'll try installing fofix 3.0.30, maybe that will fix it. I'll see what the logs can tell me. I'll come back when I have some more information.
Btw, this is my software set-up:
Ubuntu 9.04
KDE 4.2.4
FoFix 3.0.30
Update: Tried installing version 3.0.30 of FoFix, that fixed my problem.

Re: FoFix makes ubuntu shut down
*BUMP*
Not fixed at all..... running FoFiX 3100 on Linux Mint (awesome distro! ), but still shutting down after some time. So I'm trying to do some reasonable think-debugging. What could cause my Linux Mint to shut down (and Ubuntu 9.04 too)? I recently had some heat related issues on Windows 7 (RC) that made my computer do a hard shutdown (only once). Reason was BOINC (using idle cpu for making better world!) getting my CPU hot (100 degrees Celcius... ). 1 forum member on the Linux Mint forum agrees with me heat could only trigger a hard shutdown, and I'm having a soft (but forced) shutdown. It's also not a distro problem, as it happens on Ubuntu 9.04 and clean install of Linux Mint (although Mint is based on Ubuntu)......
So, help me! What could cause this problem? Could it be hardware related (I can post hardware specs if you post you think so), or software related (clean install Linux Mint + FoFiX 3100, so I would say no) ? .....

I am also using Linux Mint 7 and I am not experiencing it shutting down while playing FoFix. I am using the FoFix from SVN as an alpha tester.
It seems to me that it is not FoFix related (since it is running fine on my PC). I think it may be due to your hardware setup along with driver issues. Please post your hardware specs. What graphics card do you have and are you using the latest driver for it? I do believe you are right in thinking it may be heat related. Do you have any fans?
Also, have you had it shud down while using any other program (games, office, gimp, etc...)?
linuxmint 7 (Jaunty 9.04), KDE 4.2.3, 32-bit with python2.6 installed running FoFiX-SVN. P4-2.4Ghz, 1gig ram, BFG Nvidia 8400 GS (512mb) - beta driver 185.18.14, 2x X-ploder guitars.
Re: FoFix makes ubuntu (*update: Linux Mint) shut down
This is my hardware set-up:
CPU: AMD Turion 64 x2 Mobile Technology TL-58 (1.9 ghz)
RAM: 2x Kingston 2GB DDR2 strip
GPU: ATI Radeon x1250 (256 mb dedicated, 384 mb total)
Quite new to linux, so propably take 30 minutes to find out where i can see my driver info........ if you need other specs just say it, but I think if hardware would cause the problem, one of these would be troublemaker.
(about other software having problems, currently I'm only using linux for FoFiX and surfing the web, so haven't tried "stressing" computer (notebook actually) with other software like gimp, i'll try that soon)

My Linux Mint forum post:
So I've been playing frets on fire with no problems for a few days, but i had to make sure temperature wouldn't go beyond 86 degrees celsius. So the problem was somehow related to temperature after all. Yesterday I opened my notebook (case) and vacuumed my fan. It turned out there was some dust stuck in a fan corner, and that kind of made my fan perform quite bad.... So now my notebook doesn't go beyond 55 degrees celcius anymore! :)
But I'm still wondering if, and why, Linux has a build-in temperature monitor that makes it shutdown @ 90 degrees celsius.........
edit:
@AKdave: You made sort of a good point there. I'll have to think about it.....
