Ok, i've made this topic to try and help people who have problems with fof, if i've missed important things out of this, or you know of something else that should go in this, then please send me a pm with what it is.

If you have a problem with fretsonfire, then please read these things, and try them BEFORE making a new topic.

Right, i'll get the simple problems out of the way first,

IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE FORUM RULES OR THE FAQ, THEN IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU DO SO-

FORUM FAQ- https://www.fretsonfire.org/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=3611;
FORUM RULES- https://www.fretsonfire.org/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=SR;f=1

If you are using Frets On Fire Version 1.2.512 or 1.3.110 (Newest Versions) then-

Don't, they are full of bugs, and therefore causes most people problems, and been the reason for so many topics in this section of the forum.

It is highly recommended that you do this-

If you have a load of songs already and dont want to delete them, then move them out of the folder before you do this.

Delete your current fof,
Delete your fretsonfire.ini, and the fretsonfire text document (Start > Run > %appdata%/fretsonfire/)
Either download this (full playable release of 1.2.451 with RF-Mod)- https://www.fretsonfire.org/cgi-bin....id97231
Or if you want it closer to rockband or guitarhero, get this instead (full playable release of 1.2.451 with FoFiX mod)- viewtopic.php?p=358245#p358245
If you dragged your songs folder out, drag it into this,

If you don't know what to do with a .RAR file, or how to ADD DOWNLOADED SONGS to your fretsonfire, then-

With a .RAR file, you will need to extract the contents of it (usually a folder with a few files in, such as- song.ogg, guitar.ogg, notes.mid, song.ini, label.png).
To extract this, you will need a program such as WinRAR.
When you use it, it might eventually say something like-

Please note that WinRAR is not free software. After a 40 day trial period you must either buy a licence or remove it from your computer.

You do not need to buy it, and can carry on using it as much as you like, just close that message.

Once you have opened up the .RAR file with WinRAR, you can either click on 'Extract To' and then navigate to your fretsonfire songs folder, or you can extract it to your desktop, and then drag the folder that's extracted from it, into your fretsonfire songs folder.

If you extract the files, and they are not in a folder, then put them in a folder, and then put that folder into your fretsonfire songs folder.

(If you do not have a songs folder in your data folder, then you will need to create one.)

Once you have put the file in your fretsonfire songs folder, then all you will need to do is open up fof, and go to 'Play Game', if you have put the song in correctly, then it should appear in the list. If it does not appear in the list, then look in that songs folder, and compare that folder with other folders in your songs folder.

If you want it step by step-

1. Download the file to somewhere easy to find such as your desktop.
2. If you have WinRAR good, if not then you can get it here.
3. Extract the file straight into your fretsonfire/data/songs folder or right click it and choose extract here, and then open up your fretsonfire/data/songs folder, and drag the extracted folder into your songs folder.
4. If the extracted contents are loose (not in a folder) then you will need to put them in a folder.
5. Open up fretsonfire and go to play game, if done correctly, then the songs will appear in the list.

If you can't play certain key combinations on your keyboard, such as a two note chord, or a 3 note chord, then-

Some keyboards have certain key combinations that cannot be pressed together. This is because the manufacturer is looking for a way to save on costs, and they think that certain key combos would very rarely be used (aside from in FoF obviously). The only way around this (short of buying a new keyboard) is to remap your keys. Usually using 1-5 rather than the f1-f5 keys works. That, or try switching which key is used to strum. Some people have found that assigning strum to f12 or right-shift solves the problem.
Another way to play 3 note chords is to get RF-Mod and go to player 1 settings and turn on 2 note chords only, You will only have to hold the two outside notes, and the middle will be hit.

If you play a song and there are only a few notes in the start and then no more notes after that (also called dummy notes), then-

The fretter who created the song did not make that difficulty level for that song.

These notes are put in by the note editor that they use to fret their songs, and this is to ensure that if the song is played in Guitar Hero and it only has one difficulty level, then the game will not crash.

So I would suggest that you read the song makers posts to find out what difficulty the songs have been made for, and if the fretter has not posted the difficulty levels in their topics, then it is most likely that the difficulty level fretted is Amazing / Expert only.

If you are getting lag with fretsonfire, then-

Make sure your graphics drivers are up to date, and make sure your desktop color quality is set to 32bit (Desktop > Right Click > Properties > Settings > Color Quality).

It is worth noting that, for some people, dual core or dual processors cause lag in the game. If you have one of these setups, go to the task manager (ctrl alt + delete, you might have to click the task manager box) and go to processes. Find the fretsonfire.exe and right click, choose Set Affinity and untick one of the processors listed. While you are here, you might as well right click and set the priority higher as well.

If you are runnning FretsOnFire on Vista, you may run into some lag as well on older versions of FoF. The easiest way to fix this problem is to set FoF's compatability mode to Windows 2000 using these steps.

1) Right click your fretsonfire.exe
2) Go to properties and go to compatability
3) Set "Compatibility Mode" to Windows 2000

If your using fretsonfire 1.1.324, then it's recommended that you use RF-Mod 3.5
If your using fretsonfire 1.2.451, then it's recommended that you use RF-Mod 4.15

If it's still slow with the versions above, then there are other mods that you can try that remove unnecessary graphics.

If your using fretsonfire 1.1.324, then there's the Noob Edition Mod

If your using fretsonfire 1.2.451, then there's the Noob Edition Mod and the Mega Light Theme

Another mod that people have reported as helping with less lag is Ultimate Coffee's Mod.

Ultimate Coffee's Mod for fretsonfire 1.1.324 (FoFiX is the updated version of this mod)
Ultimate Coffee's Mod for fretsonfire 1.2.451
(FoFiX is the updated version of this mod)

Another fretsonfire version people would recommend that you try is the megalight themes for FoFiX (heavily modded version of fretsonfire that is still being worked on, topic here- viewtopic.php?p=358245#p358245)
Megalight Guitar Hero theme for FoFiX - viewtopic.php?p=304749#p304749
Megalight Rockband theme - viewtopic.php?p=210152#p210152

You will need to download FoFiX to use the megalight themes (which go into the themes folder, not the mods folder like normal versions of fretsonfire)
FoFiX now comes default with the Megalight Guitar Hero theme.

If you are using FoFiX and your game freezes on browsing collection, or you have the following error, then-

(E) Loading error:Traceback (most recent call last):

This error is the result of a bug in the FoFiX 3.100 release that allows the sort order to be set to an invalid value. This bug will be fixed in subsequent releases.

If you cannot change the sort order to something else in the options, clearing your fretsonfire.ini (find it - either in your main fretsonfire folder or in Start > Run > %appdata%/fretsonfire/, open it up, delete entire contents, save) is a surefire way to fix it.
You may want to turn off the Whammy Changes Sort Order option so that the sort order cannot be accidentally changed in the song list.

If you get the following error when trying to play FoFiX, then-

Windows players: Some of you may get FoFiX issue 959, if so delete or re-name the POWRPROF.dll file that can be found in your data folder.

If you can't find your fretsonfire log file or configuration settings file in FoFiX, then-

FoFiX has changed the path to the configuration and log file.
If fofix.ini or fofix.log is present in the directory from where the exe is run(fofix/), those will be used.
If fofix.ini or fofix.log is present in the directory from where the source code is run (fofix/src), those will be used.

Otherwise they can be found in the APPDATA directory (Start > Run > %appdata%/fofix as opposed to %appdata%/fretsonfire).
Or on Linux and Mac ~/.fofix as opposed to ~/.fretsonfire .

The default behaviour is that the files are in the appdata for win OSs and in ~/.fofix for mac/lin.

If you want to play without the pick/strum key (default enter), then-

You cannot currently play the game like this, and there is no mod available to allow this, but the members who are coding FoFix have an issue page where you can show your interest in this feature, and be notified of any changes to the issue.
Here is a link to the issue page where you can do this- http://code.google.com/p/fofix/issues/detail?id=666

If the songs cuts out when you miss a note, then-

You will need to copy guitar.ogg and rename the copy to song.ogg.

If your songs are going out of sync/out of pitch/distorted/slow/fast, then-

Resample your song to 16-bit stereo at 44100 Hz and try again. There's a way to do this in most audio editing programs; Audacity is an example of such a program.
In Audacity, set the project sample rate (bottom left of the window) to 44100Hz and export to OGG. Alternatively, you can use any of dozens of quality programs like dbPowerAmp to convert formats/sample rates/etc.
You may need to use a program such as Winamp to convert the song to a 44100 .wav file, then import that to Audacity and convert it to .ogg.

If the song is playing too fast, another problem could be that your guitar and song.ogg files are in Mono rather than Stereo format, see here- http://fretsonfire.wikidot.com/song-bei ... ast-in-fof

One very common thing is people asking about their Guitars, and to make this clear, EVERY GUITAR WORKS WITH FOF (except for a real guitar of course :p)

Just a tip from a user (nobby76) before you read about the different guitars-

When people set their controls to a guitar they usually set the navigation controls to the d pad for ease of use, then when they unplug that guitar they loose the ability to navigate the menus in the game...well I know ( most of us should actually ) a way around this...The easy way is to remove / edit your fof.ini and that will sort your controls for you, but this is more of a proactive solution to stop it from happening in the first place.

If they set the PLAYER2 controls to whatever they like, but set the P2 navigation keys ( up down left right select back ) to the arrow keys and then set player 1's to the guitar, they should still be able to use the keyboard to navigate as its a legitimate controller, but use the guitar to actually play the game. And that also means if they unplug the guitar ( player 1 ) you still have a player set with keyboard controls ( player 2 ) so you can navigate around and if need be set your player 1 controls back to using the F keys or whatever, if you get rid of your guitar.

PS2 Guitar-

Other than the guitar controller, you'll just need a PS2-USB adapter. They can be obtained from sites like:

1. RedOctane ($20)
2. Baysoftgames.com ($15)
3. eBay ($2 to $15) Note: Almost all of these cheap adapters from eBay work fine with Frets On Fire. Your mileage may vary.

Don't forget to set your key settings in the options first too. If Frets On Fire doesn't recognize all of the controller's buttons, you may also need to install and use JoyToKey.

Wireless PS2 Guitar-

The same as above, but the wireless Controllers have the stub you put INTO the PS2, You put that stub into the PS2-USB converter.

PS3 Rock Band Guitar-

No adapter is necessary. Just plug the USB dongle-thingy into your PC, Windows recognizes it, configure your keys in FoF, and you're good to go!

You may or may not have to "sync up" your guitar after plugging it in (with the button the guitar and/or the button on the dongle).

Xbox 360 Guitar-

Just plug in the guitar, say YES to the driver update, install it, and then configure the key settings in fof.
If nothing comes up for the drivers, then you can get them here-

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0e989b12-576b-42f2-b7c1-2a17ce25188b [Non-microsoft] (64 Bit)

If your using VISTA you dont even need to do that. As the xbox 360 drivers are already built into vista, you just plug in the guitar, and then configure the key settings in fof.

Wireless Xbox 360 Guitar-

You will need the Xbox 360 wireless gaming receiver in order to use the guitar, remember to get the drivers from the microsoft website, and configure the key settings in fof.

Wii Controller-

See here - http://fretsonfire.wikidot.com/using-guitar-hero-controller
And here - https://www.fretsonfire.org/cgi-bin....d144797

If you still have problems with the guitars or need help, then post here-

https://www.fretsonfire.org/cgi-bin....stid135

If you want the URL for the World Charts, then-

Go to Start > Run and type in: %appdata%/fretsonfire/
Open up the fretsonfire.ini file which is the Configuration Settings file (blue notepad with a cog on it), find the uploadurl = http://kempele.fi/~skyostil/python/fretsonfire/upload, line, and change it to uploadurl = http://www.prison.net/worldcharts/play.

If your notes look something like this, then-

Image

You are using notes that were made for 1 version of fof, on another version of fof, therefore not working. Read the description of the mods, they will either be for fretsonfire 1.1.324 or 1.2.451, nothing else.
If they have lights/pulsing/stage/crowd then it's fof version 1.2.451.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you get an error that says this-

Errors occured See the logfile 'C:\Program File\Frets on Fire\FretsOnFire.exe.log' for details.

Then go to the location that it says, and look in that file.

Another place to look for a log file, is if you go to- Start > Run > %appdata%/fretsonfire/
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you get something like this-

Then it is recommended that you do this-

If you get something like this-

(N) [Errno 1284] stack underflow

GLerror: [Errno 1283] dataspill

Then you need to update your graphics drivers, and make sure your desktop color quality is set to 32bit (Desktop > Right Click > Properties > Settings > Color Quality).

If you dont know what graphics card you have, then either go to your Desktop > Right Click > Properties > Settings and it will tell you in 'Display'next to the monitor, or you can go to Start > Run, and type in: dxdiag, and then click on the 'Display' tab at the top.

It is most likely that you will have an NVIDIA, ATI or INTEL graphics card.
It would also be useful to check your computer manufacturers website for drivers. If you dont know what computer manufacturer made your computer, then go to Start > Run, and type in: dxdiag, and it will say it next to System Manufacturer.
These sites will normally have a section that tells you what you need to do to install the graphics drivers.

If you dont know how to update your graphics drivers, also read this topic- https://www.fretsonfire.org/cgi-bin....id19102

Graphics that don't seem to work, even with updated drivers-
These are on-board/built-in graphics, and FoF uses openGL which requires a certain amount of graphics acceleration to run smoothly, which many built in video cards lack, therefore not working with fof.

SiS 300/305

Intel 945GZ Express Chipset
VIA/S3G KM400/KN400
VIA/S3G Unichrome Pro IGP
S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR

If you have something like this, and have the latest graphics drivers, and it still isn't working, then the only option would be to get a graphics card.

If you get something like this-

Traceback (most recent call last):

Then it's most likely that you either have empty folders in your fretsonfire songs folder, characters that it doesn't like being used, or corrupted song.ini files.

To solve this problem, see here- http://fretsonfire.wikidot.com/list-index-out-of-range

If you get something like this-

File "Mod.pyo", line 41, in getAvailableMods
WindowsError: [Errno 3] The system cannot find the path specified: 'data\\mods/*.*'

Then Frets on Fire cannot find its modification folder.

To solve it, check if there is a mods folder inside your fretsonfire data folder. If it isn't, then simply create it, and leave it empty.

If you get something like this-

Traceback (most recent call last):

Then your display does not have possibility to display the resolution you requested, therefore to solve this problem, you will need to lower your resolution,

So go to Start > Run, and type in: %appdata%/fretsonfire/
Open up the fretsonfire.ini file which is the Configuration Settings file (blue notepad with a cog on it), find the resolution = line, and change it to resolution = 640x480, if it still wont run for you, then find the fullscreen = line and change it to fullscreen = False.

If you get something like this-

Traceback (most recent call last):

File "GameEngine.pyo", line 149, in
File "Audio.pyo", line 49, in open
pygame.error: Sound buffer size must be between 2 and 134217727

Then there is a problem of a wrong value in your fretsonfire.ini.

So go to Start > Run, and type in: %appdata%/fretsonfire/
Open up the fretsonfire.ini file which is the Configuration Settings file (blue notepad with a cog on it), and then find the value buffersize and change the value after the equation mark to 2048.

If you get something like this-

Then usually there is a USB device plugged in that is conflicting with fretsonfire.

To solve this problem, see here- http://fretsonfire.wikidot.com/ascii-codec-cant-decode

If you get something like this-

Then you have installed RF-Mod incorrectly.

So you have done one of these things-

1. You have not copied the FretsOnFire-RF-mod.exe to 'FretsOnFire.exe' in your Frets On Fire top directory.
2. You have not copied the library.zip into the data directory.
3. Or you have tried to install multiple mods that require RF-mod and not followed the other directions properly.

Then Frets On Fire is unable to connect to the server part on your computer.

To solve this problem you need to disable your firewall, or disable uploading of scores. The option for uploading of scores can be changed in the fretsonfire.ini file (Start > Run > %appdata%/fretsonfire/fretsonfire.ini), which is the Configuration Settings file (blue notepad with a cog on it).

You can check to see if you have a firewall active in Start > Control Panel > Security Center.
Even after you have turned off your firewall, there may still be one secretly active. To make sure it's off, try looking in your Networks Connections, right-click Local Area Connection (or something similar), choose Properties, and then check out the Advanced tab.

If you want to go a step further, stop and/or disable your Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service. Get there by going Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Of course, this process may differ if you are running an OS that isn't Windows XP.

If you get something like this-

2) At the command prompt type: netsh winsock reset catalog (and press Enter)
3) At the command prompt type: Exit (and press Enter)

1.) Download WinsockFix.zip. (by: Option^Explicit)
2.) UnZip WinsockFix.zip (Pay close attention to where the file is extracted to.)
3.) Run WinsockFix.exe.
4.) Click the Fix button.

This program will clean up your TCP/IP connection and rebuild the database. After the program is complete, reboot and your problems should be resolved.

If you get something like this-

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "FretsOnFire.py", line 27, in ?
File "GameEngine.pyo", line 28, in ?
File "Engine.pyo", line 27, in ?
File "World.pyo", line 23, in ?
File "Player.pyo", line 25, in ?
File "Song.pyo", line 37, in ?
File "Language.pyo", line 38, in ?
File "Config.pyo", line 62, in load
File "Config.pyo", line 83, in
File "ConfigParser.pyo", line 267, in read
File "ConfigParser.pyo", line 462, in _read
ConfigParser.MissingSectionHeaderError: File contains no section headers.
file: C:\Documents and Settings\Khaled\Dados de aplicativos\fretsonfire\fretsonfire.ini, line: 1
'\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\

Then your fretsonfire.ini is corrupted, that means you will need to delete that file.

So go to Start > Run, and type in: %appdata%/fretsonfire/
And delete the fretsonfire.ini file (blue notepad with a cog on it).

If you get something like this-

Microsoft visual C++ Runtime Library..

Runtime Error!
Program: C:\FretsOnFire-\FretsOnFire\FretsOnFire.exe

This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Then that is a known problem, but no one is really sure how to fix it, or what exactly causes it, but one possible solution can be found here-

https://www.fretsonfire.org/cgi-bin....id69637

If you get something that says-

"This applcation has failed to start because MSVCR71.dll was not found. Re-installing the

application may fix this problem."

Then you will need to download the right file (double check what it says for you to make sure), and extract it using winzip/winrar, and copy the .DLL file to your main FoF folder (that's the one with Fretsonfire.exe in it ).

MSVCR71.DLL

MSVCP71.DLL

If there are other things that you don't know about, then have a look at the forum FAQ - https://www.fretsonfire.org/cgi-bin....id26298
Another useful thing to look at is the Frets on Fire Wiki - http://fretsonfire.wikidot.com/

If you have tried the solutions posted here, and are still having problems, then create a topic in this section with:

1) Your computer specifications.
(either list them, or Go to Start > Run and type in dxdiag, and then please post a picture of the System tab and the Display tab, you can do this by pushing print screen on your keyboard, then open paint, paste the picture, save it, open up Imageshack, browse for the file, once it's uploaded, scroll to the bottom of the page and copy the 'Direct Link', then come here, make your post, click the 'Image' button, which is just above the post, paste the direct link there, and post the message.)
2) Your fretsonfire version.
3) Your mods, if you are using any.
4) That you've updated your graphics drivers.
5) That your color quality is set to 32bit.
6) Your fretsonfire log, if there is one in your main fretsonfire folder, then post that, also post the one that can be found in Start > Run > %appdata%/fretsonfire/ (Not the Configuration Settings file)
7) Your Firewall, Anti Virus software.
8) What you've done to try and solve the problem.

I hope this topic has helped you if you have been having problems!

Mike.
