FoFix - reduce lag and improve performance Tweaks - MASTER

Postby KillerQ » Sun Dec 14, 2008 3:38 pm

Hey all,

I was just thinking that it would be great if we could come up with a collective/sticky/edited list of all the possible tweaks (short of hardware upgrades) to improve FoFix.

Here's my contribution that works for me:

a) Use the newest version of FoFix with the Megalight Theme (or Rock Band 2 Light works great as well).

b) Turn off all on-screen words(borrowed from another thread):

  • Options
    • Video >
      • Advanced Video Settings >
        • Accuracy: Off
        • Solo Accuracy: Off
    • Advenced Settings >
      • FoFiX Advanced Settings >
        • MIDI/RB Lyrics: Off
        • MIDI/RB Sections: Off
        • Loading Phrases: Off
      • Fretboard >
        • Phrases: Off
        • Solo Frame: Off
(Thanks to Azzco for the formatting!)

c) Turn Computer colors to 32bit

d) Toggle between fullscreen and windowed to see which works better.

e) Turn down/off the Anti aliasing option

f) Turn of any aimation/glow effects.

I look forward to all of your responses,

Thanks,

Matt!

Hey all,

I have also found that reducing the frames per second to 60 helps a bit with lag.

Anyone else have anything? C'mon!

One more:

Check your vsync setting in your NVidia / AMD/ATI control panel.
Under Ubuntu I have better results with vsync=off

Thanks,

Matt!

---- EDIT ----

Hey all,

Obviously these tricks that we stated here will still work in the new version (menu structure may have changed slightly, have not checked yet).... Anyone have anything else new to share?

Thanks,

With all the lag threads this really should be stickied.

I dont understand why performance is such an issue with a seamingly simple game as this. Ok, sure the game has high quality audio, but very little polygons, physics, AI etc... I cant understand why my PC can run farcry 2 smoothly but chokes on frets on fire. Does it have something to do with FoF being open scource? (not optimized, not 'professional')

The crux of the issue is that Frets on Fire is written in Python, something that's not far from a scripting language - not at ALL something ideal for fast 3D programming!!

So Python will always be the albatross around the neck of FoF, so to speak. The best solution could only involved a complete ground up rewrite in a modern fast programming language like C/C++ like every other 3D game ever written...

Python SUCKS for 3D programming!
I play on a Wii Guitar via Bluetooth USB and GlovePIE, in Windows 2000. I also play Guitar Hero 3, Guitar Hero World Tour, and Guitar Hero On Tour (Nintendo DS).

The sluggish performance of FOF (I run FoFiX 3.030) is downright shameful and should be moved away from Python as quickly as possible. (In the meantime, I play through all the stutters because it's still damn fun being able to play 3rd party frets!)

Eh, we've heard it all before, and it isn't changing anytime soon.

People either love Python or hate it, both passionately.

One more question, that the official GH3 game also runs choppy on my pc is just my pc right?

The official GH3 PC game is notoriously slow even on powerful PCs. Game publisher Aspyr has released several patches to offer some improvements in performance. Check their support website. Basically the 3D animations are so intricate that they cause enormous load to process them.

Well if I finish my C# course ill write a FoF in C

XD

But really, that shouldnt be that hard if you only program the core gameplay.

most of the lag that occurs when i play the game comes when multiple sounds are playing at once. my solution: replace some of the background sounds (starpower activate/deactivate, sound that plays at beginning and end of song) with silence (do not delete the sound, FoF needs the file there).

the rest of the lag occurs with text events, such as lyrics, sections, solo %, note streak, and starpower.

for some reason, the game lags on the first note of every song. i restart the song after, and it works fine.

i think this one is obvious, but dont use animated backgrounds, or even slideshows. i get lag everytime the background changes.

by the way, megalight themes dont reduce the lag by much. megalight themes usually dont have backgrounds. they still have almost all of the in-game sounds though. they are just smaller so they are quicker to download.
