Hello, I have a problem on ONE machine with Frets on Fire.
Namely : when I press, say, F1+Enter at the same time, it will hardly ever work, most of the time the game considers it a miss.
However, if I keep F1 pressed first THEN hit enter at the good moment, THEN it will work... But in a fast part, it's impossible to play this way.
I have to precise it's NOT a problem of "this combination of key won't be allowed because it's a cheap keyboard", otherwise it would always fail, and my workaround couldn't work.
So is this a synch problem with the game ? Or is it, like, my keyboard sucking at handling combinations and, like, passing Enter then F1 to the game ? (in that order, so that we get a "Enter with no note = fail, then F1 pressed).
If anyone understood anything of my broken english, and has an idea, please help.
Is it a game problem or a keyboard problem ? - F key + Enter = doesn't work.

It's either the keyboard or that you press enter a millisecond before you pressed the fret button. And if you did pressed the fret button before Enter, you have to hold the fret down (I'm sorry, I don't know you n00b level, just assuming). Of course, the right way to play is to hold down the fret and then pick, because that would be easier.
EDIT: You can't strum with no fret button held down. That wouldn't count as a fail.

It's a problem of you're trying to press the button and strum at exactly the same time. F# doesn't have to be "pressed" when you strum, it has to be held down at the time you strum. The best way to fix it is to learn how to play by pressing the fret button and then strumming, with little time in between. It's not hitting the strum that get's you points, it's hitting the strum while the correct key combination is pressed.
This is a problem that a lot of people who are new to GH/FoF have. I did this. My firend who's just getting into this game did this (until I learned him the right way
). If you try and hit them at the same time it's almost never going to work. You'll instinctively hit strum first. It's a simpler action since it's the same every time, whereas with the frets you have the added thought of "is this the right key" that slows you down by milliseconds. If you had a high-speed camera you'd see that your strumming first. It's being ready that fixes this. If you already have the button held, all you have to do is strum and the button is already held.
It's perfectly fine to do that, too. If holding notes far before you have to strum them is how you feel comfortable playing, play that way. That's how it is in real guitar, too. When you're playing a song it doesn't matter if you already have the chords/strings held, it's the time that you strum.
Remember that. You'll get better at it.

Yes you can and yes it does count as a miss.Gerinych wrote:EDIT: You can't strum with no fret button held down. That wouldn't count as a fail.

Goodbye everyone. It's been fun. I spent many many hours here on these boards and playing/contributing to FoF. Today I uninstalled my game and deleted all my files. I just don't have the time or interest anymore. I won't be coming back here anymore. I might show up in the IRC from time to time to chat. I regret nothing.
So long, farewell.

Huh, didn't know that. Thanks for the notice.

I'm always using 1.1.324 (because of RF-Mod).
I understand what you mean jake, but I partly disagree : In slow parts, or when there's chords, I do hold down first and strum afterward. But in quick parts, you mostly can't do that : the beginning of Sweet Child o' Mine seems impossible to do this way, at least to me... and on all the computers I played (one Macbook under Mac OS X, one Macbook under WinXP both with the builtin keyboard, one old P3/Win2K computer with a new logitech keyboard), when I strum+press the fret at the same time, it works fine (except when it's a chord). There's only one computer (Sempron/WinXP + old Labtec keyboard) on which I fail.
So I guess it's not me pressing strum too early, otherwise I'd miss on all computers, wouldn't I ?

I think that keybord might have a problem with the F1 key. Maybe it doesn't press the button all the way always or maybe it is somehow stuck so that the press of the button is registered after a short period of time, making it register so that Enter was pressed before F1.
And for the record, I have learned the way how to press the fret and the strum at almost the same time (only like milliseconds of difference), so it's not that impossible.

How do you play FoF on a Macbook?
Maybe it is the problem, you can't hold it like a guitar and you miss frets?
Nah on the Macbook it worked fine. It's on another computer (Sempron/WinXP/old labtec keyboard) I'm having problems.
It works fine too on an old computer with a P3 533mhz, Win2K and a Logitech Keyboard bought recently (the game is laggy but I have no problems fretting correctly).
But on that Sempron+WinXP+old Labtec keyboard, I suck. So I guess it's the keyboard.
I may sell it on ebay indeed :p but I'm not sure anyone will buy it.
