Well, without any answer from anyone here, I went out and bought the Radio Shack Playstation->USB adapter to try. It did not work.

Can anyone tell me about another one that will work, specifically on a Mac?

Any experience/insight into either of these:

Surely I can't be the only Mac user who wants to play Frets on Fire with an actual Guitar Hero controller.

playing with a mac is like eating soup with a fork.

I love the forks, it's cool for a lot of things, but not for soup

Thanks for the, um, "helpful" post, winniez. It makes no sense whatsoever, and brings nothing to the table. Why bother?

You may need a key mapping software such as OSX Overdrive.

http://www.usboverdrive.com/USBOverdrive/News.html

The software sort of picks up my PS2=>Converter (It says EAXUS on the coverter, not sure the actual make as it is an import) and then you need to map the controller keys (as best you can) and then keep testing under FOF. If you can get one key working then you are off...
Hope this helps.

Thanks, lardbloke. I had USB Overdrive installed, and proceeded to map the keys on my original Guitar Hero (Red Octane, model PSLGH) controller. I was able to map the five fret buttons... but not the PICK... it doesn't register in USB Overdrive at all. (I was able to map the start/select buttons instead, though.)

So now it works, just not the way I'd like. It feels a bit awkward and I'd like to be able to use the pick button to "strum" like you do in the standard GH.

Does your EAXUS converter let you use the pick? If so, I'll shop for a replacement for my Radio Shack adapter.

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it!

In USB overdrive under "Handheld devices" does the prog i.d your device??
I am suprised it does not pick up the strum.

Anyway my PS2 adapter was just a cheap jobie of ebay (type in PS2 to PC USB CONVERTER 2 PLAYER and it is one of the cheap dual blue thingies), I think it cost less than 5 pounds. It is one of the dual controller types and works fine for all games and yes the strum bar works fine.

Best of luck and hope you can get strumming soon....

What I meant was that perhaps it was a conflict with something else, although I wouldn't even know where to start troubleshooting. I run a webserver on my Emac and don't want to do anything that might affect that (I am a teacher and it's for my students!).

I have installed python 2.4.4 and newer pygame to go with it. Still no go!

On the plus side I have just spent an hour playing on FoF on my mini mac, with only one crash which required a restart (haven't had one of those on a Mac for a long time!). It's great, but I really do suck big time.

I got to get me a controller!

I also have an eMac and it won't work :(. I did everything with the chalkboard font and what not, but still nothing. I get a black screen and nothing works but pressing "return" which takes me out of it. Any help please???

I haven't tried any playstation to usb adaptors with FoF as I currently don't have a guitar controller.

However I have successfully been using these for two years with dance platforms on Stepmania.

The ones I purchased have no trade marks or logos on them but they look like the Smartjoy plus adaptors.

I'll report back when I get a guitar controller next week.
Offer them what they secretly want and they of course immediately become panic-stricken. [Jack Kerouac]

Thanks for all the helpful replies, gang. I'll pick up another one of the suggested adapters and will report back.

Fofer: I'm using the BOOM PSX -> USB Converter adapter. Works great with the GH controller. I bought them about 2 years ago so I don't know if they still make them. These weren't the PSX/N64 ones, just PSX.

Is there a good tutorial for Mac users anywhere? I got quite confused with the whole adding songs thing, since there are no folders, just a .app file, but couldn't find any help. I figured out that the .app file actually has that whole folder structure and everything built in, and I was able to put my songs in by exploring the contents of that package, but I'm not sure everybody knows about this... Maybe I'm the dumb one for not knowing about that in the first place, though. ^_^

Works great, by the way. Awesome game. It looks luvverly on my 20 inch iMac (intel). Only thing is that it crashes whenever I try to apply changes in the settings, but that's no big deal. I've gotten used to just pressing enter to let it close down and then booting it back up.

Yeah, the applications folder is just there to help you get organised, so you know where all your... well, applications are. The nice thing about the .app system is that there aren't a jumble of folders cluttering the desktop, because the folders are hidden in the file.

FYI, the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero II is coming out in March. That controller will be USB. Fingers crossed that one works on the Mac, too. I'll be ordering it and will report back.

While agree the .app system (with us installing the songs inside the package) results in a "cleaner" install, it's decidedly non-standard and will throw many gamers for a loop. I figured it out rather quickly myself, but lots of folks won't know what to do. If the Mac version of the application is updated, it will be a rather clunky upgrade experience too.

That said, I can hardly complain. The app looks great, runs great, and is free. Anything above and beyond that, at this point, is gravy in my book. :)
