Got a problem. It works just fine as long as I don't have a folder for songs or the folder is empty, but when I add songs Fofclose stops working. It just crashes at startup without any message.

stdout.txt:

Dou you have a a folder called "python" and does it contain "cerializer.py". The last error message suggests that this is missing... granted, it should not be sufficient to crash the game any more but please check anyway(It will result in high scores not being saved/loaded for sure).
There seems to be something wrong with the library loading, but I can't figure out what since the few crash reports I have are different from what I've been able to produce myself and I don't have a proper debugging setup on windows (only place where I can get any crashes, rock solid on linux....) so finding things is slow. If you don't mind fiddling around a bit try changing the song directory so that its only a subdirectory of your main song library and see if any work.
Just tried with my full song library, it produced one of those "fofclone.exe has detected an error" dialogs but the program kept running just fine.... And this hadn't been happening with the smallish set of songs I had been doing my windows testing on. Anyway, I'll look into it when I have time (work is eating up my daily dose of coding).

would you like for me to try to get the error in Linux?

Edit: I get this error when trying to compile:

Spoiler:

Code: Select all

/home/eric/Games/FoFClone/src/menuobject_basic_types.cpp: In constructor ‘Menu::Item_long::Item_long(std::wstring, std::wstring, std::string, std::string, Settings::Manager*, long int&, long int, long int, long int)’:

/home/eric/Games/FoFClone/src/menuobject_basic_types.cpp:208: warning: format ‘%d’ expects type ‘int’, but argument 3 has type ‘long int’

However it does continue to compile. But when i try to run it, it gives me this error:

Spoiler:

Those are just compiler warnings, they should not cause issues. (Apart from indicating that my code could do with some cleanup and really large numbers wont get printed right)

The relevant bit is:
Fatal Error: Couldn't set 1024 * 1280 GL video mode (Couldn't find matching GLX visual)

Something is wrong with your GPU, its drivers or something else along those lines. I can't say exactly what since I don't know any details of your setup and that error is produced by SDL (a library I'm using) not by my code. Fortunately your not the only one ever to get erros like this; googling for "sdl Couldn't find matching GLX visual" should get you started.
Also the resolution that the error reports is the wrong way around, it tried 1280*1024 @ 32bpp, althought this should not have anyting to do with your problem.

It's there.
I tried messing around with song directory, but it doesn't matter what I do. The game only works if the songs folder is empty or doesn't exist.

Oh hell... guess it's back to installing MSVC so I can get a usable debugger. I just don't understand how that bit can cause crashes as it's absolutely full of debugging code an should report just about anything going wrong....

Edit:
Regarding that other error, if the file is there it probably means that something has changed in the way scores are handled by FoFix (I assume that's what you use) after I last updated. Or you just have some garbage score data.

I finally got some sort of a debugging setup working on windows, so hopefully I'll have a fix to that song library crash soon. Allready found one potential source for the crash. Its actually crashing inside the debugging code so the debugging code can't really handle that crash...

Edit 1:
There's also another one that's happening somewhere inside the operating system dll's...

Edit 2:
Both bugs got workarounds (they happen too deep inside the system for me to debug them properly).
One of the workarounds involved capping the number of background loading threads to 1. This is likely to slow down loading of songs with multiple audio files.

I'm adding one little feature and then uploading a fresh binary.

Edit 3:
New version is available, hopefully fixes the crashes people have had. (they all happened on the operating systems side, blame microsoft)

Dude I love the tails on the long notes!

So I really went through this game right now, and I must say you have a lot to offer. You really need to get rid of the nasty POV though.

This game has now turned into Pulse. Look in this section for it. There is a new release there. I'm sad to say that any further development has been halted at this time due to lack of contact with the coder.

Typhus wrote:Well, there is a main.cpp file, so I'm guessing that, since the game isn't compiled we need to have a way to run cpp files. That is, we need something like Visual Studio (or any other program that reads/complies C++ language).

I would like to try this...but I guess I'll wait for an exe file correctly complied and working.

Anyways, keep it up.

In the folder I found a file install.txt and here it is.....

1. If you allready have the binaries, skip to 3.

2. Compile howto:
Make sure you have cmake (www.cmake.org)installed. This is needed on all platforms.
Make sure you have all the necessary libraries installed (freetype2, sdl, sdl_mixer, sdl_image, python, boost_filesystem)

If you are on linux:
Open a console window and navigate to the directory where you have this file.
Run "cmake -G 'Unix Makefiles' ". This will produce the perhaps more familiar Makefile.
Run "make"
There should now be a binary called 'fofclone' in the directory.

If you are on OS X I have no idea what you need to do to compile, but starting with cmake is probably a good idea.

If you are on windows:
You're on your own, getting anything compiled in windows is a royal pain in the ass, and a simple text file will not be sufficient to guide you through it.
It took me ages...

3. Run the game once, tweak any settings you want. You will also need to create a new player before you can play.
A directory named settings should be created. It contains a file 'fofclone.ini'. Edit it to your liking. All the settings cant be changed from within the game yet.
You are now ready and set, have fun.
