I believe the bundled animated backgrounds all use Xvid. In my experience, I'd only get a crash when using those or my own backgrounds if I didn't have the codec installed in a way that Phase Shift likes. For example, installing Xvid through the K-Lite codec pack wouldn't work, but installing CCCP would. I suppose it couldn't hurt to uninstall all codec packs you have, and any manual Xvid codec installs you might have, and trying CCCP again. Otherwise, thekiwimaddog or fatdog might have more targeted advice.

At some point in the near future I'll be spending some time researching these issues to figure out why people are having so much trouble with video backgrounds. The problem for me is all of my test machines haven't shown any issues, so I'll have to try and provoke it to happen myself. This can be quite time consuming which is why I've been putting it off. But it's now high up my list and I'll be working on it shortly.

My best suggestion is to try cleaning out all the video codecs on your system and trying either the regular Xvid installer or another codec pack (K-Lite is one of the best). Or you could try a virtual machine or something, since you wouldn't have to get farther than the main menu to see if it crashes or not if you enable the menu background video.

We have tried a virtual machine a few times and had no problems. I'll have a good look into it this weekend and hopefully figure out what's going on.

@Ray: yeah, CCCP gave me absolutely no problems with Phase Shift videos (other than RockBand videos showing up flipped vertically). Never used K-lite since CCCP but I heard their latest release is a bit unstable. Might want to test different versions.

Has anyone tried to see if ffmpeg can handle this alone?

I uninstalled all the codec pack and I installed Xvid, CCCP, K.Lite and still the game crashes when I turn on the video backgrounds :crying:

maybe you should try and put internal codecs to Phase shift? or does that cost money? just a thought lol

man, i been playing all week all the PS3 rock bands, solo sections and BRE(and "mini solo drums starpower") are really fun to play and i hope someday will be in this game :P

I know that i jsut can keep playing those,but having the entire library of all the GH and RB in one place,is too convenient

Hey guys, quick question. Yesterday i turned my new drums from GH: Wor to play on Phase Shift and it didnt work. It was saying to map the controller or something. How do I do it?

I believe that if you go to the main downloads page there will be a software called PSCtrl. I'm pretty sure it'll have support for five pad drums. Good luck.
