Well...

Do the RB controllers even work like normal controllers anyway? I was under the impression that they hooked up via a usb dongle (I only have Wii GH instruments myself). Which they can do whatever they want with, really. If that dongle can handle > 4 controllers, it's all good. But then you have to be able to show that in-game without taking up too much screen real-estate.

You only need a "controller" for each person on vocals. The other instruments use the usb dongle so they don't need actual "controller" spots.
Re: Green Day Rock Band Demo hints at Keyboards for Rock Ban
I play rock band with a wii and I have a usb guitar. When I have my usb guitar hooked up, it's always marked as 2nd player. It's because I have to connect a wii remote to get to the game. Each wii remote I connect, it bumps my guitar to a higher player, until 4 remotes connected, no guitar connected. My usb controllers won't work when I have the controller spots filled as they are counted not as important as the remotes.

What if, and just what if you're not supposed to play all the instruments simultaneously... maybe the keyboard will take the place of another instrument if selected.
Just maybe...

you know they could kind of set it up under the vocal line at the top, or have it under..
Have the keys falling down onto a keyboard just above the karaoke whatever the vocal thing is called area.

And thus if they did have 5 players at once, no one would be able to see the stage backgrounds anymore.
I think most likely the keyboard instrument will have a neck the same width as the others, and like RedShadow suggested, still limit it to 4 players at once.
We'll just have to wait and see...

Have any new peripherals been announced/confirmed? Could they just be charting the synth parts on a guitar track?
Re: Green Day Rock Band Demo hints at Keyboards for Rock Ban
I'm guessing that, in order to not require people from buying new peripherals (or not as much), they'd make you sit with the rb guitar on your lap. Poof, 10 keys.

If this counts.
The bundle is rumour, of course, but I really don't see this being done without another peripheral.
