fretsonfire.org Forums are back online!

Postby nwru » Fri Jan 08, 2016 11:24 am

For those of you that have joined prior to 2016, you'll notice everything looks a bit different! Here is what has changed:

- The obvious one is the forum style. We've (finally) abandoned the "eye bleeding" red style that we've used since these forums first opened. This was created by wolferacing and based on an old style by raph666, so they deserve the credit. It's also mobile-friendly! Go ahead and resize your browser horizontally to see what I mean.

- On the back-end, we're now on the latest version of phpBB (3.1.6). This add more neat features and allows flexibility in terms of extensions and style modifications.

- There is a new Thanks for Posts feature that you may have seen on other forums. On each post, you'll see a familiar thumbs-up icon that looks like this Image. This will give a "Thanks!" to the poster and show a list of thank-ers below that post.

- There is a new Best Answer feature too. A topic starter can now mark a particular reply post as the "best answer" and this will show up near the top of the topic to help future users. The icon to mark a post as such looks like this: Image. This is currently only enabled in Tech Support, FOF Mod Discussion and Support, and Forum Talk forums.

- The old karma system has been abandoned and replaced with something better: reputation (points). This number is the sum of Thanks and Best Answers from the two above-mentioned features. Old karma values have been reset, so everyone gets a clean slate. There will also no longer be negative values.

What we'd like from you:
Let us know your input! Questions, comments, criticisms, ideas, etc. Also be sure to let us know if anything isn't working or if something just doesn't look right or isn't working right.

Another special thanks to wolferacing for his help and hard work during the upgrade.

Next up, new moderators!

Enjoy!

Woooow, this looks so, so cool.

1. One improvement I would do is to make a clear difference between what's been said in a post (the actual message a user is posting), and all the other stuff, such as name and time when the post was posted, title, signature...

Right now, it's really easy to know when a new post by a new user is coming, cause there are 2 different red tones. That's really awesome. But once you're looking inside the "comment box", things get a little mixed.

2. I'm missing also a post number, like #67 or something, right before the "Re: fretsonfire.org Forums are back online!" title, or below it. Indeed, that title is kind of useless, you see it all over the page, and it always says the same "Re: fretsonfire.org Forums are back online!". I would remove it cause it's useless information.

I.E.: in this post, a random message up there:

I would make a clear difference between "nice, thanks!" and all of the other stuff. I see it right now a little messy.

3. I would put some basic tools when creating a new post, such as bold text, quote selected text, italic... so we can use them without moving to the advanced editor, that changes all the page.

4. Also, it would be really nice to have a "quick edit" button so we can edit our message without moving to the advanced editor page.

By the way, the colors of this forum totally rock, it's super eye friendly, there's no atomic white anywhere, so it's perfect to navigate in here, no flash screen that blind you or irritate your eyes. Thank you for using the red color.

I've noticed this and am working on a fix. It does get a bit jumbled.

Great work guys! To all that were involved thank you too! :2thumbsup:

Was beginning to feel bored while the site was being fixed up.

Zippyshare took a good left hook with that downtime....

I bet there were some users thinking to themselves "i'll get it next time"....but the site goes down!
They'll probably have second thoughts now.

Have a great day ppl!

I'm really liking the increased character limit on topic titles, I'm glad that was implemented!

The overall layout looks great on 16:9, and it's way easier to edit long posts now. Thank you to everyone involved!
