Frets on Fire 1.2.512

Postby nwru » Sat Oct 20, 2007 10:39 am

A fresh version of Frets on Fire is out. This time around we focused on general bugfixes, performance improvements and making the game run more smoothly, especially on older computers. Only a few new features were introduced, most notably the support for importing songs from Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s.

Download Frets on Fire 1.2.512
Edit(nwru): We (fretsonfire.org) don't recommend this version, as it can be very buggy for some people.

If you used the Windows installer package of the previous version, please uninstall it before using this latest release.

Here's a more complete changelog:

* Graphics performance improvements
* Effects optimization
* Font rendering optimization
* Miscellaneous bug fixes
* Added import support for Guitar Hero 80s
* Translation updates
* World Charts standing is now reported after each game

Not likely for some time.

The Hering mod still isn't out for the last version "yet".

This version is mostly just bugfixes, so it will probably be an easy port. I will see shortly.

After playing with this for a bit I am not sure I see the performance improvments they are talking about

It looks like the windows version uses OpenGL 3.0.0a, which has never yielded me good performance. When starting a song, or ending a song there's a lot of graphical lag which I am blaming on openGL version.

Also the directory layout is not the same. They have a lot of the python stuff in the top level directory that was in the data directory before.

Also this is using numpy differently than before. So I think porting will take a tad bit longer.

Visually one thing I did notice different is that the glow spin speed is much slower.

It's a shame, I really love the new font rendering (everything looks so clean and smooth)...
Not happy with 1.2 until they get rid/replace the ugly stage system, though... A video would be so much better...

Hmm, dunno where the right place to report bugs is (the reports on the FretsOnFire SourceForge bugtracker never get assigned to anybody), so again, 1.2.512 crashes for me on Linux:

I'm quite disappointed for this new version. I was hoping for more Jurgen...

compared to what? rf-mod?
If you compare with 1.2.451, there's definitely a huge loading time difference
And the glow doesn't only look different in the rotation speed, but also in the rendering, you can see it's rising, kind of a replacement for the hit flames I guess

But anyway, not a bad version, I'm note sure to really appreciate the new font rendering though, it looks a bit weird when there are lights flashing behind text.
And it will say that upload failed when you upload to php charts instead of the django world charts, not because it really failed but because it wasn't able to get the 'standing'...error message should be fixed...or our php charts maybe
