If it's a magnetism thing, look online for a degaussing unit or steps to build one yourself. Defortunately, if it's an LCD monitor, then a degaussing unit won't help you.

If it only started happening recently, then one of many things could be happening...

1. Monitor is dying
2. Faulty cables
3. Faulty graphics card

To test if the monitor is breaking, test the monitor on at least two other computers. If it works on one computer, it might not be the monitor, but rather, the computer or settings.

Since "DragonFail" "sucks" so much, I won't post anything related or about them any longer.

I was going to point out that it may be your graphics card on the verge of failing. Does this happen with your old monitor, or any other monitor? When my old nVidia card began to fail, I got random colored lines on my screen occasionally.

I'm sure it's my monitor - it's second hand and all this never happened with my old monitor. If I take a screenshot, the screen looks perfectly fine so I'm guessing that it's the monitor that's broken.

a screenshot doesn't take the signal the video card shoots out to the monitor, it takes what is supposed to be rendered on the screen. I've had driver issues come up with my entire screen being shades of pink but a screenshot didn't show any evidence of such.

My point was that you should check how it looks with your old monitor NOW. If it wasn't messed up before, then you wouldn't have noticed it then.

You solve problems by trying things people suggest. The slowest way to fix something is to convince yourself it is DEFINITELY one thing. If it isn't that, then how can you fix it?

Okay, I swapped my old monitor back - it's fine.
Swapped the 'new' monitor to another PC - it's still 'broken.'

Conclusion:

Thanks for you help and suggestions, though.

Since you apparently knew already, why the hell would you even post.

I figured it out after the first couple of posts. I already told everyone that I identified the problem but people kept suggesting things to me, so I told them I was sure.
