Best of the Beast is an excellent introduction. It helped me get into Maiden and has a good deal of their essential songs

I don't know if any one album can really give you a feel for what Maiden has been
about for these last few decades. A compilation CD is as good a place as any to start.
But if you must choose one album, I suggest choosing one with Bruce Dickinson on
vocals. His material tends to be the most popular, thus it's the best introduction in my eyes.
All of my songs can be found at My song thread.

I disagree with the previous post.

x100

I'd suggest for first time listening songs

1. Iron Maiden
2. Holy Smoke
3. Phantom of the Opera

You get one of their early songs, one of the few without a solo
A fast "upbeat" song
One of their many epic, technically complex songs (with a short bass solo at that)

how about:

Iron Maiden/Genghis Khan
Afraid To Shoot Strangers
Rhyme Of The Ancient Mariner

-you'd have a relatively short song, with variation, a great bassline, and similar to other early maiden songs. this is to introduce "di anno maiden"

-a pretty calmed song with an incredible bassline, vocals, and similar to other bruce dickinson maiden songs. i know cuz this one got me into having twice as much maiden as i had before

-and a very long song with an epic bassline (as a bassist, i cant help it  ) which gives the 1st-time-listener an idea of what 1982-1984 maiden sounds like.

but thats just me anyway, i would also go ahead and introduce number, run to the hills, their famous stuff...only AFTER this.
