3D Modeling Programs

Postby White Dragon ZB » Sat Jan 10, 2009 4:36 pm

I'm looking to start 3D modeling outside of school, mainly for fun, but I'm not entirely sure what program to go for. I'm currently using Bryce, but are their any other good free 3D modeling programs, and what is the best program overall (even if you have to pay for it).

Blender is good.

If you want to go into the games industry, however, you may want to acquire a copy of 3D Studio Max, which is the industry standard as far as I know. But I don't like it much. It is prohibitively expensive too.

Yeah, some companies use other software of course, but if you look at game modding you find there are usually 3ds max exporters for the model type. I hear Maya is quite good, but I've never tried it.

I've been using blender since 2.43. I'm not an artist but I can say I'm able to produce stuff in it. It might take awhile to learn how to use it for gaming purposes and high-end graphics modeling, but most of the basics you can learn in only a few hours.

You can build a model with Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, and finish it with MudBox or ZBrush.

Anyway, any Autodesk software does the job.
