I'm a tech person too, with a specialization in computer networking. They have to establish a connection to your computer before they can attack it, and a router prevents them from doing so, unless you do something stupid and forward lots of ports to your computer. Even nothing more than a NAT'ing router is more security than a software firewall alone.
I never said that a router was worthless for security (I did say that there are a few, which there are, though rare) , I just meant that a router is not invincible. If they REALLY want your PC, they will get it. But, a router will block most medium to low threats, making it a nice plus. If you don't use a router, I do recommend having max security. But, even in these modern days, there are alot of people who have direct connections (they get hacked the most).
