.pngs and transparency issue
I think this is the right spot for this...
Anyway, I'm having a problem with transparency in .png files.
I create them in Photoshop and they look just fine, but when I load up FoF those png files have a white halo around the edges, it's really annoying and it looks like crap -.-
This is an old problem with transparent images but none of my old fixes seem to be working with FoF.
Any help from the community with this?

Re: .pngs and transparency issue
try adding a small amount of black transparency to the canvas.
you'll get more help i think, if you post an example image for people to look at.

Re: .pngs and transparency issue
Well it isn't any one particular image, it's any image. No matter what I try to make. I could make a big black circles for notes and in FoF it will have a white halo around it.
For instance I tried creating some notes in Photoshop, saved them as a png file and started up FoF. They have a white halo border around them. I did try using some black at half opacity around the images and the white halo just surrounds the black now.
I have the RB theme, and I tried modding some of the png files in that. The ones in the theme look just fine, there's no white halo around them at all. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Re: .pngs and transparency issue
I have had the same problem. Only sometimes though, most of the time everything is good, and no white halos are visible. But sometimes, I have VERY clean cut edges, and still a small halo appears. Yet, when I view it in an image viewer, or even MS Word etc. , I have no issues. I think it's a FoFix strange issue IMO (OR possibly photoshop...though I doubt it lol) What version and platform do you use photoshop on. I have Photoshop CS3 On mac.
Re: .pngs and transparency issue
I'm using CS4 on Vista if that's any help. I tried uninstalling CS4 and putting my old copy of Photoshop 7 on to see if that would help, lol. But no go...
I know what you mean about having clean lines (no anti aliasing) and halos still appearing on an image, I've tried everything I can think of. I even tried using 8-bit pngs but FoF won't even load those =\
I assume it's a photoshop issue because of some of the other themes I've downloaded (RB2 - GHWT). The png files in those images work perfectly, never saw a halo on those at all. But as soon as I edit one in PS and save it... BAM, those white borders pop up :(

Re: .pngs and transparency issue
are you using the blending options?
try duplicateing then merging your images to remove the flash objects before saving as .png
also for some stubborn images i've had to save as interlaced then open the new file and save again as deinterlaced to get them to work in game.
just throwing it out there. i don't really notice this use cs2 and xp

Huh? I used CS4 on Vista too. No problems? You should give use a sample of your work. That should help us.

Re: .pngs and transparency issue
It's not a Photoshop issue, as all you see in PS is all you get in the file, there's no "secret" halo that pops out only in FoFiX, i think it's how FoF handle images and how it's "sensitive" to what they contain. And in any case there's no option during save that can change the way a png is saved or stored apart from transparency, interlaced and custom palette, and the latter two can't be used in FoF...
Generally hard straight edges (like a square with no AA) easily tends to create halos; a bit of AA/blur helps out a lot, or even a thin black external glow (in "levels > level style" I guess, my PS is in italian :P) ^_^

Re: .pngs and transparency issue
I agree that you should post some images that have the issue. I've never seen it before, and would like to try experimenting with the formats and see if I can find a problem.
For the record I don't use photoshop, I use Paint Shop Pro (or occasionally Gimp) on Windows Vista (and now windows 7)

Re: .pngs and transparency issue
Thanks everyone for the help by the way.
So yeah, here's a real quick example:
This is the original image I made in Photoshop, just a square with a plain old black and gray gradient on it:

And here's what it looks like in game: (Megalight Theme)

It's the score panel, so you'll remember that FoF flips it upside down. It does this glow thing with any image though, the fretboard, the score panel, notes... it doesn't matter.
See that huge ass white halo on the edges? I will try adding some AA to the edges later though, see if that helps any.

Re: .pngs and transparency issue
That image you posted is a JPEG. What I was looking for was the original PNG with the problem to experiment with.
Re: .pngs and transparency issue
The .png file

Here's the original psd also if anyone needs it.

Re: .pngs and transparency issue
I just did some quick experiments using the Gimp... When you save images as PNG in then it gives you a few options... I turned off "save background color" and "save color values from transparent pixels" and the halo disappeared.
I guess that the rendering in the Python image library fofix uses does some sort of weird thing where it ends up showing the colours of some supposedly transparent pixels around the visible ones. No idea why...
But if there's an option in the PNG saving settings to save background colour and/or save colour of transparent pixels, turn them off and see if it helps.
Here's the PNG I modified from the one you posted above:

Re: .pngs and transparency issue
What the... the white halo is gone!
Thank you sooo sooo much for that.
Unfortunately, PS doesn't have those kinds of options when saving a 24 bit png, only an 8 bit png, and FoF refuses to load when it sees one of those around. I guess I can just use Gimp for saving from now on, that's not a big deal.
I'm just glad that glow is gone, that's what mattered. Thank you and to everyone else again for the help, much, much appreciated
