I'm mainly asking for the initial flame, not the glowy one in the long notes (for that one probably more graphics are required, and more complicated effects like the sparks that you mentioned, and it would be a lot of trouble for something not that important). The initial flame, however, I feel is more important to get them right.
My mod (for fof version 1.2.451):

Latest release (5.23), there's a readme in there to install & stuff (source code included).

The way it's done in GH and GZ is there is an initial flame that expands and fades (at the same time) almost instantly. It is used for the hit and the notes without tails.
For held notes, after the flame fades, it is replaced with 2-3 spark graphics. The way it looks animated is they just switch between the 2-3 graphics really fast. (they also shoot off little embers or something, but this is unnecessary) And remember, the flames themselves glow.

Recap:
Flame expands and fades VERY fast (the circular part of the note)
Smoothly replaced by interchanging sparks (for the tail)

If you want to make it better, that's the way to do it. As for the current version, AWESOME. I didn't see it coming this far quickly like it did.

Ok, so I converted them for you... They look way better than before, at least to me!!!
So... Right click the images and save them in your computer. Then, go to the folder where the fale and hit files should be, and place them there... DO NOT ERAGE THE SVG's!!! Then, simply play and you´ll see the difference...

Keeping the file names exactly the same, hitflame-2--.png like that? or just hitflame-2.png?

No, rename then to: hitflames1, hitflames2, hitglow and hitglow2 in png format :)

awesome. so much better. Also, it allows the end user to modify those pics and mod the look of the flames even further.

did you name the new ones the same as the other ones - or what someone said to name them-, back up the old ones, and then replace the old ones with the new ones?
