I'm mainly asking for the initial flame, not the glowy one in the long notes (for that one probably more graphics are required, and more complicated effects like the sparks that you mentioned, and it would be a lot of trouble for something not that important). The initial flame, however, I feel is more important to get them right.
The way it's done in GH and GZ is there is an initial flame that expands and fades (at the same time) almost instantly. It is used for the hit and the notes without tails.
For held notes, after the flame fades, it is replaced with 2-3 spark graphics. The way it looks animated is they just switch between the 2-3 graphics really fast. (they also shoot off little embers or something, but this is unnecessary) And remember, the flames themselves glow.

If you want to make it better, that's the way to do it. As for the current version, AWESOME. I didn't see it coming this far quickly like it did.
