Custom Charts and BPM Changes Every Few Seconds?

Postby AurenKleige » Sat Sep 19, 2020 10:53 am

Hey everyone. Pretty new to charting, but one thing I've noticed as a drummer that has really got me scratching my head...

I've noticed some custom charts (which I inevitably have to fix since the rhythm for them is slightly to horrendously off) have a new BPM posted in the chart every few seconds. I know some songs have BPM transitions/changes at certain parts, and those are not the ones I'm talking about. I'm talking about people posting BPM changes in the middle of nearly every single measure of a song. It honestly has driven me nuts to have to go out of my way to fix these when I'm not sure why they did this in the first place.

Does anyone have some insight on this? Maybe I'm in the wrong and somehow posting a new BPM to mess with the beat every few seconds is actually the way to go? Am I missing something?

Looking at charts taken directly from Rock Band games, etc, it looks like while there are sometimes BPM changes posted (as you do for some songs), they didn't do this kind of thing. So it is perplexing to me that this comes up quite often in Custom charts that feel off.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

For some songs, the rhythm is highly variable. (For examples, look at my charts System of a Down - Prison Song and SiM - KiLLiNG ME.) This means the bpm will be changed every few measures, or even every measure. But those changes are actually good, otherwise the song would be off. But I haven't really encountered charts like you describe - where the bpm changes super often and the timing is horrendously off. Are these mostly old charts? I don't know what happened in the old days, but some old charts tend to be... not so good. '^^

They were probably older charts. Let me pull up one as an example...

This one was from about three years ago. Admittedly the notes and a bunch of other things were also off about this song, to the point where I decided to create my own version of it over the last several days. Here is the one I originally found though...and you'll notice the BPM changes are every half of a measure or so in rather odd places.

I don't see any BPM changes at *all* actually? This person doesn't seem to have used the BPM feature at all. The notes are all off the beat markers as well.

Yeah, looks like a chart from someone who hasn't been charting songs for very long. Redoing the entire thing would be the healthiest way.

Oh, right, I forgot this was the weird one that didn't have BPM listed at all.

Let me grab one with weird BPM changes.

Here's an example: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... Facpp8kCy7

My favorite song, btw. When I found a chart for it, I was really excited. Tried to play it, and it was really off. So I had to go in and not only fix the BPM, but also basically redo the chart because some of the notes were off anyway. xD

Oh I love that song as well!!! I'm actually the one who brought it to the charter's attention, haha. ;p

I hadn't noticed it while playing the chart, but opening it in EOF really made it obvious that the sync is off in a lot of places. It seems unnecessary too: when I charted another Moonfall song (The Willow and the Swamp), it had a constant BPM all the way through. I have no idea why that's the case. '^^

Okay, glad I'm not crazy. I actually have a fixed version of the song in my Playlist now if you want to give it a try. :)
