A conjecture on why we have 5 guitar frets
from what i see FoF, GH, and even RB go by the same theory in fretting. The number of fret buttons evenly divides into a normal guitar 5 times. So technically shouldn't each individual button have 5 different frets (or 30 notes) attached to it.

Re: A little theory on guitar fretting
Personally, I think they should make a six-fret controller instead because at least then it would match the number of strings on a normal guitar. But it is challenging enough at 5 frets, so I think they decided on five just to limit the difficulty of the gameplay.

...That's a stupid ass theory lol.
No cause then you would have notes that are obviously higher or lower being on the same fret. And that's just silly.

But frets =/= strings
It probably could do with more frets, but not only do they have to limit difficulty, but they have limited screen real-estate, too. 6 would be fine, but much above that and there would just be no room on multiplayer.

It's not that stupid for one thing. It's just putting it in another perspective.

well that was terrible
5 frets because there are only 5 notes played on a string (other than G string) before you go up to the next string starting from the same note. very few guitars have 24 frets

As a real guitar player of 7 years i can say that's a load of scheizer
24 fret guitars are actually quite common... it's even a standard in some bands (e.g. a7x, dream theater etc)
and the theory wouldn't work, considering you don't always go up frets when you go up a note, for example if you sweeped an a minor arpeggio starting on 5th fret E, according to your theory the chart would go O B Y Y R Y Y B O, and that looks quite retarded when you're actually going up when the sweep goes down and has random doublestrums. yeah i know that is a lot to take in but you should check real guitar theory before you go making silly little theorys. hope that didnt look like a little flamefest :P

The theory still makes sense, it's just that when you get to actually charting it, if you applied that theory to the chart it would, as you said, not make sense.
There is a difference in the design and concept for the interface, and how that interface is used in the final product.

Re: A little theory on guitar fretting
It was stated on the rockband forums by one of the harmonix team members that Songs are charted in a simple process. They find the sheet music, master, and the specific track of the instrument in question. They look at the next ten notes they have to chart and chart it how it sounds. THey then go on to th next ten notes, charting it how it sounds. When they finish this. They then use the sheet music to clean up tempo mistakes, Timing mistakes, and the note mistakes. They then sync it with the instrument of question in the master and then mix it together with the rest of the track. Just like most of the fretters around here. That theory just simply doesn't work.
Guess whos back? Whatever. no one cares/

Re: A little theory on guitar fretting
It's a theory on the design of the guitar controller and game interface. (Why did they choose 5 fretbuttons?)
charting rules and methods are completely different. Charting could only happen after the gameplay and input interface was finalized
