I seem to absolutely suck at the game. The tutorial isn't much help. I can't pick up my keyboard like a guitar because the wire is too short and behind lots of other wires etc.

What hints and tips would you give to an absolute beginner like me?

I'd say get a Guitar Hero controller. Best way.
Its just like life. Quite interesting in parts, but no substitute for the real thing.

360 X-plorer...60 bucks new...will last a long time and the new drivers from microsoft work with gz2...another epic queer-o program...rock band guitar is junk...stay away

Or get an other keyboard, with a longer wire...
