Here is another topic everyone is always debating here. Lets put it to the test.
We all agree that FOF is awesome, but.....
"Is FOF a Guitar Hero Clone, or its own Guitar Rythm Game?"
I myself vote for 'GH Clone'
Included features does not make the game any less of a clone.
There have been tons of Pac-Man games created homebrew and many of them have different mazes, options, maze editors, etc... but they are clones.
Its more of the look and not the 'options' that define a game as being a clone.
If FOF would have came out on day one and not done the fretboard style of layout and had some type of 'originality' to it, then I could see it as being a stand alone game.
When you can take a screenshot of FOF and show it to 300 gamers who havent played FOF yet, and ask them... "what game is this?" the majority of them will use the words "Guitar Hero" in their response. (Or.. "A guitar hero" TYPE of game)
That fact in itself will convince me that FOF is a GH clone.
When the gameplay screen changes (or gets modded) so much that it doesnt resemble GH - then I would consider it a standalone game.
Take other rhythm games, like Boom Boom Rocket for example. You show someone a clip of that, and do you think the words Guitar Hero would come out of their mouth? Maybe a few, but not many.
Now THAT I would put in the category of "A Different Rhythm game". But not FOF.
It really comes down to YOUR definition of what a CLONE is. Here is www.dictionary.com 's definition of clone:
"a person or thing that duplicates, imitates, or closely resembles another in appearance, function, performance, or style"
Clone.

i just got FoF today, and it's alright. you make your own songs and stuff, and download them, but a lot of people don't know how, and the rythm is off. The main thing I HATE about FoF are the HOPOs. I have difficulty telling the dif. between HOPOs and normal strumming notes.
I vote no. It is, especially when I play with my Xplorer, but no.... whatever... I like GH better in a way, but FoF is free, and definitely rocks. That whole post was stupid. I know.

Graphics have nothing to do with it. What is the point a any game? Yup, the game play. And no matter the subtle and out right differences in gameplay. The basic mechanics are exactly the same. Strumming while trying to hit notes with 5 fret buttons.
Got to say though...I think this is the 1st time I liked a clone better than the orignal. Except maybe Crazy Kong.

"Don't mind the differences, it's the same"? By that logic, everything from DDR to Pa Rappa is the same game because you're trying to hit buttons in time to music.
I don't think FoF has enough features to be considered a GH clone. GH is much more fun to play because of the possibility of failing songs and the career mode.

rockband is gonna be some kind of 'guitarfreaks-linked-to-drummania'-clone...
Even if people mainly know about GH, I would not make it the absolute reference in rythm games, voted for No.
True. There's at least 8 or more GuitarFreaks games. It's been around before the PS2 even was released yet afaik. Only difference is that GH had 5 frets rather than 3 frets.
So FoF is pretty much a clone-with-customizability-of-a-game-that-is-a-souped-up-clone-of-the-original-game.
To me its a clone because a lot of the mods that are made, which are great btw, make FoF look, feel and even sound like GH.
Speaking of the features that separate them, a lot of the questions people ask here are for those GH-like features(whammy bar, star power, internet play). In fact if python had pitch changing do you think the developers would put a whammy bar and star power in when it came out? I sure do.
More and more things keep coming out to make FoF look like GH, but I feel if if you want GH look-alike mods then u might as well buy the game or get GZ. Just my opinion.
