I did everything the guide says, and the folder is made and everything, but when I open up Frets on Fire, the song I made doesn't show up. Any suggestions?

Sounds similiar to this: https://www.fretsonfire.org/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=3;t=7124
Make sure that you have the "song.ini" in the song folder and all necessary info in it :p

Is there any alternative sites or a program to convert SNG files to MID? I've been waiting for the site to get back up, it's been down, and I can't convert my song.

I don't know if it comes up much, but I had a problem today and found the solution to it, so I thought it deserved a post.

The problem was that I had a guitar.ogg and song.ogg that each sounded perfectly normal outside of game, but when I brought them in to play, the song was sped up and played at a higher pitch. It was the "chipmunk effect." I tried deleting one song and copying the other in its place. No luck. I tried deleting both songs and converting them again from scratch. Still fast and high pitch.

At some point, it occurred to to me to check the frequency. My theory was that the game only played songs at a certain frequency, and if your song didn't match it, it would play extra fast or slow. My songs were at 32 kHz, and I bumped them up in Audacity to 44 kHz. Sure enough, they played normally after that.

So like I said, I don't know if it comes up often, but if it does, you'll know the fix now. It's crucial that your songs are saved at 44 kHz. You can see where to set this in Audacity in the image.

search next time will ya

by the way, wouldn't it be a good idea to add Freetar instructions to the tutorial? I have seen few topics about problems with freetar. (well mainly the note selecting issue)

I have just started playing FoF and I required an offline SNG-MID convertor. And I found one!

ftp://ftp.voyetra.com/pub/voy/seqplus/seq_gold.zip

This is a DOS based software which is provided on an ASIS basis. However, it does the trick of converting the Freetar .sng file to a .mid file.

And yeah, if the above link does not work, try this site

You have to register first though..

everything worked - i had the .ogg - i set the notes - i saved the sng file- the web page made a .mid out of it - i created an .ini file..

ingame i want to select my song but it has no difficulties, so i tried to add some more difficulties on the web page..
the only thing happened is: the midi file got bigger but i still don't have nothing to choose and get an out of bounds error in game.
(the midi file sounds good)

Which files do you have inside the song folder (the one you are trying to make)?

Just a tip. Hope it gets added to the main tutorial.
Please do make a distinct guitar.ogg. Whenever guitar.ogg and song.ogg are similar the sound mutes on every mistake. This makes a horrible song release.
I know that none of us here are guitar geniuses (may be some are). And that's why we like this game.

Here is how you can make a distince guitar.ogg:

1. You can get the guitar part of a song on youtube. Just type in "[the song's name] + cover", of course without the quotes. There are many more search strings that will give you the guitar part of a song on youtube, e.g. "[the song's name] + guitar", "[the song's name] + instrumental" etc.
Here's one I found for Haunted by Evanescence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLAIALLRbBs

2. You can just grab the video (flv file) using this website:
http://javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php

3. Use this software to seperate the audio (into mp3 format) from the flv:
http://www.aoamedia.com/audioextractor.htm

4. Use Audacity to convert the mp3 to ogg.

There you go. You got your distinct guitar.ogg.

Hopefully we won't see any more of those poorly made song releases that get muted every few moment.

PS: You might need to do some sound editing, but the pain is way better than playing the song on a guitar and recording it. And the result is a professional grade song release.

I have a question concerning the .sng/.mid converter located here -http://www.nukular.ch/foftools it works with pretty much everything I make, but i'm having problems making "stairway to heaven" its quite a long song. I get and error message stating that the file size is too big. Does anyone have a suggestion?

I've tried the DOS version up a couple posts but i'm DOS retarded so that doesn't help...
