As far as I know, Python can run fairly fast (how is Python different from assembly?), so as someone said, don't insult the code.
On topic, for performance and aesthetics, I think videos should use sprites a la Bemani games, like Guitar Freaks and that one Beatmania clone for PSP.
Of course, actual embedded video would be much easier to make (and, in theory, shouldn't be too much of a performance hog, but, hey, we all know how long this program take to load songs...).
