You can easily cover 2 frets with your index finger all times but when those 2 frets alternate very fast. In that case, move your hand a key to the right (or left).

most of the time you are better having your fingers on frets 2-5 and reaching out to fret 1 with your index finger (being more agile than your pinky)

also i remapped Esc to F12 so i don't hit it accidentally
